Why is it that the medical profession needs to know if we have guns or not?

my son was release from behavioral health and he told them we had guns. What business is it of theirs? he is not allowed here anymore. I had to go to the hospital on New Year's Day and that was one of the first questions. are you suicidal?

This is so easy to understand. Just a little while ago, a mentally ill young man (read: poor behaviour health) lived in a house where his mother had an arsenal (guns like yours). The guy took his mother's guns and killed a whole bunch of children and teachers.
Now this is the important part: mentally unstable person (your son) PLUS lots of mom's guns (your guns) PLUS anger/rage/out-of-control-moment(son in program) = mass murder. It happens over and over and over. Should a mentally unstable person be living in a house with a bunch of guns? The answer is NO. The families of all the people killed by boy + guns thinks so. So does your government. Once again: mentally ill boy + guns = murder.

Thanks we don't have an arsenal by any means. The thought occurred to me that possibly someone wants to know who has guns and who doesn't .

When they see signs of depression or behavioral problems, they recommend that the person not have a gun to avoid a possible suicide..

It is an intrusive question, but a necessary one to determine the mental health of their client. Friends or parents of the patient is the FIRST place to look because it is accessible. Just because he is NOT allowed their, doesn't mean he might not break in as he would know where they are kept and how they are stored. Don't take the questions personally, they are just trying to keep him ( and others) safe from any possible (?) harm.

Keep in mind that many of our rules are there because of legal reasons. If your son were to obtain your gun and do harm to himself or others, you could have a legal issue. You and I could both argue that you are not responsible but a good lawyer could prove otherwise. Thus the need for the questions.

Aiken, they probably want to know because more than likely the first place a person is most likely to get a firearm from is a family member........is it right that they are asking.....that's debatable for sure....

If the person is mentally unstable it's a legitimate question. If it's just a routine medical condition I'd say it's none of their business.

I imagine that in regards to mental health, it is an appropriate question for reasons already mentioned here. But, your medical doctor can ask......but you don't have to answer. Its your prerogative. They said that on Fox news.
