Can you put tile down on a plywood subfloor without using concrete board and it still hold up to specifications?

No, you need to install the substrate backer board properly with thin set on a sturdy subfloor for the tile job to last.I know it sucks because the materials to prep for setting the tiles are about equal to the tile materials themselves!
