Most gum today is a type of plastic. Originally it was the sap of certain 'gum' trees. In ancient Greece/Rome is was the mastic tree. In ancient Mayan civilization it was the sapodilla tree. Early native americans and later american settlers chewed sap from the spruce tree. This also became the first commercially sold chewing gum in 1848. Same guy then invented soft parafin chewing gum in 1850. You can get the same effect today if you buy those wax lips or tiny wax bottles of juice then chew the wax. Modern chewing gum began with the import of chicle meant for making tires but didnt work out. So it was reinvented to chewing. Chicle is a tree gum/sap very similar to the tree gum/sap called latex used in making rubber. Most gum today is a synthetic chemical based copy of chicle with alot of hydrocarbons.
Its made out of a type of artificial latex called chicle. There are some assorted flavors, softeners, and waxes to give it an appealing mouth feel. Add some sweeteners and that's about all of the ingredients. How many of you remember the gum named by its major ingredient?
