Why do our eyes see in color?

Report as

Rods and cones. It is an advantage to our survival to see in color. For example, color allows you to distinguish between poisonous berries and edible ones.

It's better than seeing things in black and white.

Evolution saw an advantage in seeing in color I would presume.

Then you explain to me the real reason, please. I hope you're not one of "those" people who are going to be like "God did it, and you're wrong no matter what!" Evolution doesn't just give us random abilities we don't need. It's plays in our advantage in our survival. I hardly see how that is wrong.

Because there is light, without light, there would be no color.

Because God made light receptors within the eye which transmit messages to the brain, which produces the familiar sensations of color.

There's a gland in the back of your eyeball that looks like a rainbow puked on it... Haha light reflects on the gland, which makes you see color.

PeruvianPanda IS RIGHT - please don't complicate this with Bible references - the Scribes who wrote our Book knew NOTHING about ancient history. REAL, VERIFIABLE HISTORY!!!! Fossils of Humans you can see with your eyes and touch with your hands - no theory involved!!!

The earliest Hominids were still mainly fruit eaters and being able to see the red of ripe fruit was a major advantage. Those individuals that could see color were healthier and had more babies, so color selectively became the dominant advantage in survival. That is the answer to WHY we see in color our survival depended on it....
