How do I get this girl to listen to me while I give a lesson?

Today was my first day as the new instructor in this dance studio, and everyone was respectful to me except this one girl. She was constantly talking while I was trying to teach everyone, she stopped in the middle of a lesson to answer her phone, and she was even changing the choreography! I can understand why somebody might be cranky because our lessons start really early in the morning...but the way she was acting was just rude. I really need her to pay attention while I teach so she doesn't hold back the class, we also have a dance competition coming up in a few months and today my dancers learned nothing because of her. How can I get her to pay attention? I also don't want to be rude because she is 3 years older than me....Today was the most stressful first day I've had and I'm afraid that her behavior will just get worse. What can I do to get her to pay attention and participate better....?

you have to get her to understand that she is the student and ou are the instructor, and if she refuses to listen to your teachings, then she will no longer be allowed to participate in the class

Tell her that she's distracting the class and that the class won't go far because of her.

...well.. Maybe after class is over, have a talk with her about how she is dissrupting class and there is a concert coming up. She must obey the rules here, and follow the dance steps, or there will be consequences. (Idk what your consequences are, maybe to get kicked out of the class.) hope it gets better. :/

There really need to be consequences for her actions....escalating to her having to leave the studio if she can't be professional. If you can't do that, then you can remind her that she and everyone in the studio are paying for their time there and she is wasting everyone's time and money. I think some public shame may help get her to behave. And she has to put that phone away! How rude!

Age doesn't matter; you are the teacher and she is not. You need to confront her about it. Don't let her participate if she can't listen or be respectful.

Where I am age really does matter, if you're rude to someone older you're immediately scolded. But you are right, I am the teacher. Thank you :)

try to find out why she is acting this way and if she she is still being rude tell her that she is the one who will not do well in the competition while her other classmates will do well

Stop the class. Tell her if she is there to learn to dance she needs to pay attention. If she is there to talk on the phone she needs to take it outside so the rest of you can get on with the lesson.

Remove her from the class. Problem solved. You're probably not going to change her behavior. She worked a long time to become the cad she is.

Separate her from the other girls and have her sit alone while the others have their class. Report her behavior to her parents. They will not want her to be wasting time when they are paying for dance lessons. If she does it more than one day, on each day, separate her and have her sit alone.

Twenty-three years old? I would expect that behavior from a 12 year old. Good luck with her.

I'd lay down some ground rules and then follow through with them. No cell phones in class for one thing
