Is something wrong with my sister?

Ever since she was 2 or 3, she's always really afraid of people. For example, if she goes to a party, like one that's not wild or too fancy, she walks around the room with her head down. It's also happening one-on-one with, like, someone who's interviewing her for a job. She kind of freaks out and doesn't go. So I'm thinking she doesn't like strangers. She's fine at home, but she's angry a lot. I think she's also a bit depressed. Since this is affecting her career and social life, I'm asking, is there anything really wrong with her?

Stranger anxiety is normal in children under 5 but as they get older they normally overcome this. Being that she is old enough to go on job interviews tells me she might be older than 5, and probably an adult. This could suggest a pathology. Have you tried talking to her about this? You said this has been happening since she was 2 or 3 and now she is an adult, have you parents noticed this? Did they do anything about it? Did she ever see a psychologist?

Talking to a psychologist may be helpful for her in overcoming this.

Sounds like social anxiety and depression to me. Counseling and meds can be be very effective in helping her overcome these fears

My brother is the same way, they're just some people who prefer just to be loners. There is a fear of the unknown in most people and it can cause can people ostracize themselves.

She needs help. She could be turning into an agoraphobic. She needs to talk to a professional before it becomes worse.

Unfortunately these are symptoms of several serious mental health conditions. As described, your sister needs professional help and soon. She need not suffer so much as there are therapies that can help her navigate a more manageable life. It's sad, mental illness is hard on families.

I'm sure she's just really shy, there's nothing wrong with being shy! Maybe you and her could go out to eat at Olive Garden or somewhere so she could socialize with people, don't worry though she'll come out of her shell one day!;)

If your sister still lives at home, talk to your parents about taking her to your family doctor. If she is on her own, you might offer to go with her. These symptoms could mean nothing or they could be alerting you to a medical condition. I think it would be best to have a doctor see if treatment would help your sister since it is interfering with her daily life. Good luck!

I used to be sooooo afraid of strangers, but it was from a scary childhood experience (I was almost kidnapped), did something happen when she was younger to make her act this way?
