Is this a good idea ?

I plan on moving to California with my boyfriend and our child before the end of this year. Is it necessary to visit the place we are buying before moving there or could we just stick to looking at places online?

You can't always believe things you read/see on the internet. Omaha is a huge city close to where I live, and I was looking at apartments up there, online of course. Checked out this one, and it looked and sounded fantastic. Get up there, only to see the neighborhood where this apartment is located, is not one I want to be in or associated with. I roll my window down to look at the building, and this lady comes up to me and says "If I see you looking at MY man again, I'm going to gouge your eyes out". Needless to say, I rolled up my windows, locked my doors, and didn't even get out to meet with the landlord for my appointment. No thank you.

Well, how far away are you from California? I think you should take a trip over to California as a vacation and to look at the place you are possibly moving into.

Things on the internet are sometimes far different than what you get in person.

I live in California and there are some great places and some not so great places. You might want to make the trip to check it out. Also, each city has it's own web site and you can look up crime rates and other important information. If you have any questions about any place specific in Southern CA I'm glad to help.

Which part of southern California would you best recommend for us considering that we have a child? And how's the cost of living there?
Report as
The cost of living in California is pretty high. South Orange County is the best but it's very expensive. I live in Corona and it's really nice and not as bad. Yorba Linda is also good. Let me know if you want to buy or rent and about what your looking to pay and I'l be able to help you more.

If you can afford it, definitely take a trip to CA, before signing anything.

It's better in my opinion to see what the place looks like and meet the ppl that are giving you the place to also see if you like their services. Also if you DO end up going to meet the ppl face-to-face bring up any questions and when you leave ask a resident or neighbor (if they are outside cuz I would be weird if they had strangers at their door) what rating they would give the place over all. good luck and hope this helped ;)

Where is in Cali are you planning on moving? I live in Cali. Maybe I can help by letting you know what the neighborhood is like. Looking on-line is very different than what it actually is. .

So what are some good areas in southern California considering I have a child? And how's the cost of living there?
Report as
Southern Cali is a very large area. You need to narrow it down a bit.
It is very expensive to live here.
Do you have ant dea what county? Do you have jobs lined up? Unemployment is pretty bad out here as well.
Report as
Groovy! I'll try again. Happy! Happy! Thanks! :)

I live near three different counties (they all join up within a mile or so from me) and have traveled quite a bit in the state.
What us it that you are hoping to find here? If you have money, there are a lot of really great places. If not, your options will be limited.
Let me know around what counties (Los Angeles, San Diego, etc).

I'm looking for some place near san Diego 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom. . And a decent place to raise a child. If san diego isn't a "kid friendly" area, do you know any?
Report as
Anywhere in SD county is great....not south of San Diego itself though. The towns south of there like National City or Chula Vista are not very nice areas.
Stick with San Diego and the cities north and east of it. It is pretty expensive there as well. I have lived in San Diego, El Cajon, and Alpne. I travel
There at least once a year. I lived there rom age 12 through 22. It is great for kids. A world class zoo, beaches, mountains, so much history!

Hi. I would most definitely come and personally check it out. Look into the references too! Also, see if you can have them send pictures of the neighborhood. You don't want what happened to Cjkenkel happen to you, your child and your boyfriend. ynp.214 is a super connection if you are heading toward that area. Good Luck! California is lots of fun! Yippee! :)

I'm a Californian and it's awesome but some places are not so good I think you should move to San fransisco or Los Angeles . If you enjoy small streets with a ocean view then San fransisco , if you enjoy busy streets and lots of beaches then Los angeles. Good Luck
