People want to ban guns because this will reduce the number of guns in the society hence reducing the ability of a criminal to acquire one. People will also be dependent on the government to protect them hence the role of the government will be defined in the society.
It's the recent shooting that brought the ban on on guns to the public's attention. Interestingly though I heard in some parts of the country, people are buying more guns because they're getting paranoid.
they think it will stop the shootings (ex. VT) but im my opinion, they are doing something illegal anyway! they aren't just gonna say ' o well, now that guns are ban, i can't go shoot up a theatre'. most of the guns they use were bought illegally anyway
There is a difference between banning and controlling. Some people go to "banning" as a knee-jerk reaction. Unfortunately banning guns alone will not curb violence and crime. It takes a multi-point effort, focusing on all of the precursors to criminal behavior - family life, mental state, access to weapons, socioeconomic status, social status, education, etc.
We can only control our own lives and our own families' lives, so most of those precursors cannot be controlled by the government. That means the access to weapons is all they are able to control. Unfortunately all it really impacts is the access to *legal* weapons, so if someone still wanted to use one for a criminal act, they'd still be able to do it pretty easily.
Tragic events sadly occur, and will continue to occur. And this topic will be brought up every time. But nothing is going to be banned... its like the big abortion debate, everyone has a strong opinion but its so muddled that there will never be any difinitive solution.
