Do you think some teachers should have guns in their classrooms? Why or why not?

What if the gun is locked away and it could only be opened with code that only the teacher knows?

Report as

This has got to be the worst question ever! There are so many enraged teens in a high school. In one of my classes, I have three boys who don't know who their fathers are. One girl has met her dad once and is getting really angry about it. One boy says racist things and the girls threaten to break his teeth if he keeps it up. Several of my students do a lot of drugs and are now experimenting with combinations. I took knives away from two of the boys on the same day without incident. Last year I had a girl in my class who went to jail for a long weekend for beating up her boyfriend because he tried to dump her. Can you imagine MY stress if any of them thought I had a gun in the room? I will not work in a building with guns.

Better hope that some crazy person doesn't show up with a gun and pray they listen to you telling them that.

Would you agree with an armed gaurd( an off duty police officer) stationed on school ground

And honestly in my high scholi could walk into a random room and find seven or eight people with pocket knives i even carried one every day it wasnt weird to see people using them out in the shop or anything at all

I think it would help if all outside doors except one were locked, and all traffic flowed through one central door with a guard posted. More supervision monitors patrolling the school hallways would help too.
There are so many upset kids in a school. A boy gets dumped. A girl has her phone taken away. The presence of guns would make it worse.
I should have said this was a bad idea -- not a bad question. I was all riled up. Sorry.

Rathkeale : Great answer ! Having guns at school is just asking for trouble !

No. They need armed security guards.

Yep!

But people bent on killing can avoid the guards. Not knowing who is carrying is a much better defense from killers.

As soon as they hear shots they'll try to stop them with lethal force.

Well after the Connecticut shooting, some teachers may have guns in their classrooms. However, I don't believe they should, because if children get their hands on it, even if it is securely locked up, it could be very bad. Besides, most people who have guns are more likely to get shot by someone else with a gun, because they do not know how to handle the gun themselves.

Principals should be allowed to keep a handgun locked up in their office. Not required, but allowed. There are many responsible gun owners out there that train and practice with their firearms. A few days before the school shooting there was a shooting at a mall. The gunman's weapon jammed and an armed citizen took aim. The gunman then took his own life. How many more people would have been shot if that citizen wasn't allowed to carry a weapon.

Locked up doesn't help in an emergency. Carrying it at all times does. They can be concealed you know.

I think it's a good question and provokes thought. As a teacher, I would answer no although I'd love to be able to protect the children better, but there are just too many angry children no matter what the age...even 5 year olds. On the other hand, I've seen a parent come to school with intent on shooting a teacher who had reported his 12 year old child pregnant (it turned out to be by him) because his daughter had to be taken in to foster care during the day. When she didn't arrive home from school, he blamed the teacher instead of the authorities. She ran to the parking lot and drove away because the office had buzzed the room to warn her that they had not been able to stop him. Would she had had the time to even get a weapon since he was ready to shoot her? No one knows. But I am telling you, these kinds of incidences happen hundreds of times a day in teachers lives throughout this country. And that's why this was a good question.

She is lucky she had time to run. It would have been better if she was carrying her own gun.

I would agree it would be good to carry a weapon. But as things stand right now. We just can't immediately decide to tell teachers to carry weapons without plenty of safeguards in effect. The man shouldn't have been allowed in the building. That would have helped islam if those in the office did their job and informed him before the end of school that his daughter hD been taken in by police to foster care but they were too scared to because he was nuts . So then back it up some more and someone should decide parents that are nuts should have to take their kids somewhere special, a highly guarded school, to protect children in the normal average school . Then you have 5 year olds stabbing fellow classmates with sharp pencils in the face. So until every scenario can be worked out and practiced upon which would take YEARS to cover each one, along with the fact a teacher probably isn't going to be able Roger to a locked weapon in time, the only way would be for her/him to carry it on themselves which would require extensive training on EVERYONE'S part, especially the students. They would Lso need to be trained in every possible scenario if their teachers were to return gunfire. As it is, there aren't any practice scenarios so far that have worked perfectly without teachers having guns. If all those things could be ironed out, sure, I'd carry a weapon. But what if a crazy parent punches me out when angry his kid didn't get all A"s on her report card and grabs my gun? So other things would have to happen first, and that would be NO ONE in the school but teachers and students going through a detector first thing every day. Ok...when do we teach. And then there's the problem of the parking lot. As a gang walks by and decides to shoot into a crowd of kids as they're getting on the bus? I could to on forever about the scenarios I've seen. If teachers were required to go through a type of "boot camp" in the summer for 6 weeks EACH summer and address how to handle every possible scenario it MIGHT work, but then we get into

the teacher's physical abilities. Not all teachers are 21-:35 year olds who can be trained to act with quick response rimes and agility. The only way I can see is to have each classroom equipped with an aid who is responsible for those duties also (protection of students and teachers) and that'll be a cold day in you know what before that happens. We just can't say," ok, tomorrow bring your weapons to school and oh by the way, tell the kids to duck when you have to start shooting". Personally, I DID bring my Beretta to school. Would that have helped against the weapons used by these people. Nope. But the bottom line is we should be able to protect ourselves and these precious children who while they are at school, we really do treat them as they are our own. Our parents depend on that. Our parents depend that we will educate our child and get them home safely. So that includes the way TO and FROM school also. It's so complicated. What would my wish be??? It would be to have 5-6 trained men/women who are having a hard time finding jobs getting out of our military and be employed in each school. They've practiced and have been through so many scenarios. I could actually teach the children like I am supposed to and the children would feel safe-except for the ones that dread going home because of the abuse there and that's another sad mess our schools are in. Abused children lead to angry children. It just foes on forever. So like I said, employ these soldiers coming home to protect us. They could do it without appearing military style-dress normal if that upsets everyone -but have those skills that took boot camp and deployment to polish their senses and skills. The deterrent in itself might just stop this mess.

Yes. Many mass killings could have been lessened had teachers had something more than a pencil to fight back.

I wouldn't want a gun I don't like guns and I know that having a gun doesn't mean you can actually shot at what your trying to shoot at you may hit innocent people with stray bullets trying to aim at one person a lot of people have guns on them like security guards I wouldn't trust them either just because you have a gun doesn't mean you know how to use it most people can't use there gun if there life depended on it they don't clean it or know how but I agree with you what you said about me

If the teacher is, say a hunter, or a veteran of a forgein war and brings a pistol to school concealed on their person, is not a bad idea.

Yes if it is on them and concealed at all times. Why?? To save and protect the children. Movie stars, political figures, etc have armed guards around them so why would we not protect the children? Even Obama's children have armed protection. They are no better than our own children.

and worth it

It would be cheaper to have a gun, locked up in a safe that only the teacher knows the code for, and the teachers could be trained on how to use the guns
