This has got to be the worst question ever! There are so many enraged teens in a high school. In one of my classes, I have three boys who don't know who their fathers are. One girl has met her dad once and is getting really angry about it. One boy says racist things and the girls threaten to break his teeth if he keeps it up. Several of my students do a lot of drugs and are now experimenting with combinations. I took knives away from two of the boys on the same day without incident. Last year I had a girl in my class who went to jail for a long weekend for beating up her boyfriend because he tried to dump her. Can you imagine MY stress if any of them thought I had a gun in the room? I will not work in a building with guns.
No. They need armed security guards.
A child could find it. Not a good thing!
An angry child who gets bullied finds it.So, no.
Well after the Connecticut shooting, some teachers may have guns in their classrooms. However, I don't believe they should, because if children get their hands on it, even if it is securely locked up, it could be very bad. Besides, most people who have guns are more likely to get shot by someone else with a gun, because they do not know how to handle the gun themselves.
Principals should be allowed to keep a handgun locked up in their office. Not required, but allowed. There are many responsible gun owners out there that train and practice with their firearms. A few days before the school shooting there was a shooting at a mall. The gunman's weapon jammed and an armed citizen took aim. The gunman then took his own life. How many more people would have been shot if that citizen wasn't allowed to carry a weapon.
I think it's a good question and provokes thought. As a teacher, I would answer no although I'd love to be able to protect the children better, but there are just too many angry children no matter what the age...even 5 year olds. On the other hand, I've seen a parent come to school with intent on shooting a teacher who had reported his 12 year old child pregnant (it turned out to be by him) because his daughter had to be taken in to foster care during the day. When she didn't arrive home from school, he blamed the teacher instead of the authorities. She ran to the parking lot and drove away because the office had buzzed the room to warn her that they had not been able to stop him. Would she had had the time to even get a weapon since he was ready to shoot her? No one knows. But I am telling you, these kinds of incidences happen hundreds of times a day in teachers lives throughout this country. And that's why this was a good question.
Yes. Many mass killings could have been lessened had teachers had something more than a pencil to fight back.
Absolutely not.
I'd never trust a teacher with a gun ever
If the teacher is, say a hunter, or a veteran of a forgein war and brings a pistol to school concealed on their person, is not a bad idea.
Yes if it is on them and concealed at all times. Why?? To save and protect the children. Movie stars, political figures, etc have armed guards around them so why would we not protect the children? Even Obama's children have armed protection. They are no better than our own children.
Yes but only if they have been properly and extensivly trained and the firearm is kept in a secure place that is easily assesable only ro the teacher like a police style holster
Yes! They re blaming this on the gun when the teachers should have been able to protect themselfs!
id say have a security gaurd at all classrooms, an armed gaurd. that way they will be guns in peoples hands who are trained to use it, and it wont end up in the wrong hands
There are so many upset kids in a school. A boy gets dumped. A girl has her phone taken away. The presence of guns would make it worse.
I should have said this was a bad idea -- not a bad question. I was all riled up. Sorry.
