night might be to intense, but it's great for a history lesson, any of the jane austen books, preferably emma, as it has a very interesting social dynamics, and can be a good discussion book. a brave new world is always good when talking about society and it's limitations, I read all of these when I was in 8th grade.
I recommend Pictures of Hollis Woods. 12 year old girl who was abandoned as a baby, and sent to live in a Foster Home. Soon after she goes to live with Josie Cahill, a retired loving art teacher. Hollis is a talented artist and her life stories unfold through her pictures. A while after living with Josie, Hollis is sent back to foster care due to Josie getting old and forgetting many things, and can't take care of Hollis anymore. So she returns to the Foster Home where she meets the Regan's. They offer to adopt her after having her visit for the summer one year. Hollis and Steven get in a car accident after being late for the last day- they climb to the top of the mountain. So Hollis feels as if she is ruining their family and runs away with Josie to a cabin in the woods ( the Regan's summer cabin ) Steven shows up there, Hollis asks why he is there, he calls his mother and says Hollis is here with him, she freaks out and goes to the cabin. After all this Drama.. in the end Josie goes to live with her cousin Beatrice ( lived with her life time., and Hollis moves back in with the Regan's. Very good book and movie, the movie is a lot better though :) Hope it helped.
