What items cause a chemical change and aren't changed themselves?

Report as

John34621 is right - substances that initiate chemical reaction, but remain unchanged are CATALYSTS. The most frequently used catalyst is platinum, but there are a whole range of metals and compounds that are used to modify the speed of chemical reactions. Enzymes initiate and modulate biological change within living things. They are not necessarily unchanged in the chemistry, but are still regarded as catalysts by most researchers....

They are called, in general, catalysts, and there are too many of them to list here.

Enzyme is the item that changes things but it does not change its state. Generally, an enzyme is considered to be a catalyst and it can be used to speed up reactions.

catalysts. An example would be some epoxies (glues) you mix with another substance. That other substance is the catalyst. the influencing factor that intiates the reaction.

The "catalyst" in two-pot plastic reactions is called that in the industry, but it IS changed by the chemical reactions that take place. Examples would be methyl-ethyl-ketone peroxide, cobalt naphthenate or benzoyl peroxide. These initiate the reaction, but are changed chemically in the process.... In epoxies, the two halves of the reaction usually initiate the polymerisation once they are mixed without needing a separate "catalyst".
