What are the side effects of an expired face cream?

I used a night face cream and I don't know is it expired or not (it's not in the original package), because the smell and the consistency of the cream is not bad. What should I expect if it's expired?

The ingredients may have separated, or changed in chemistry so that you might have a bad reaction to them. I once was using a lotion just fine, then stopped using it. When I found it again about six months later I tried using it, it BURNED like acid and turned my skin bright red.

If it looks and smells ok, then it should be ok to use. If you react to the product then throw it out.
