"Cardiac" valve. So named because when it is irritated, it produces the sensation we call "heartburn." It is there to stop strong stomach acids from going up your gullet or food pipe and causing severe burns to delicate tissues. If that effect is confused with a genuine heart event, the effects can be life-threatening!
It's medical term is lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is also termed cardiac sphincter, gastroesophageal sphincter, and esophageal sphincter.
