Why are both John Calvin and Martin Luther "heavyweights" of the european reformation?

Report as

They both fought to gain freedom from the Roman Catholic Church.
Luther brought about the truth of Free Will.
Calvin fought for predestination.
They endured pain , persecution , and death for the sake of change.

I dont know about calvin, but luther died of old age. Admittedly, he made a lot of enemies, but everyone that he lived around loved him.... No more pain or death than anyone else....

And you say "freedom" like they were prisoners or something. No one was making them be catholic, they could have left whenever they felt like it. And another thing (again, i do not speak for calvin, but i have done studies on martin luther), luther didnt "fight for freedom" because he didnt WANT freedom! He didnt even want to break away from the catholic church! He simply wanted to reform it in ways that it honestly needed reforming. At the time no one listened to luther, but a couple of years after his death some church higher-ups looked at his works and thought, huh, this guy was actually right about some stuff. They took stock of themselves and realized just how corrupt the church really had become at that point and they held a giant council to resolve all the issues. Its thought that, had this council have been held when luther first asked he likely would have stayed with the church, for it resolved almost every one of his complaints, and certainly all the major ones. But because he was pushed aside he started to find more and more things wrong (but again, he never left. Martin luther was actually a catholic when he died, for he did not protest the faith yet). Then his followers took these things and blew them up and found more things and then THEY split off from the church, something that martin honestly probably would have been against. He simply believed the church needed reform, once it got it he likely would have been happy.
