Who is responsible for the increase in social security payroll deduction rise?

Report as

Congress and the prez. Obama basically gave us a 2% vacation from our SS contributions for the last 2 years but it never should have happened in the first place and could not be sustained without causing damage to SS. All the pols basically agreed to let the waiver expire.

It was a holiday to allow the Middle class to buy goods and services, or as they say: "create demand" in a sluggish economy.
Report as
Yep, part of obamas stimulus that the right complained about, now they're complaining because its reverting.

What I dont understand is Obama said he didnt want to tax the middle class but raised the SS % back up?!
Less pay.
Report as
He didn't raise it, he just let it revert to what it's been for years. SS took a hit with that 2 year vacation we got which is not something it needed

Ohhh ok I see, thanks.

Sweetx, the tax rates on income did not go up for the middle class. For example : if you made $85,000 last year and you made $85,000 this year,
You will pay the identical IRS INCOME TAX. That is without regard to differences in your deductions, credits, exemptions OR the FICA taxes. Also I agree with Boo153's answer.

I just think Obama is just not qualified to run this country. It seems everything he tries to do, backfires. Get ready for the ridiculous gun bans coming. His way of appeasing the masses, but little to do with solutions.
Report as
Because you didn't like the 2 year vacation he gave you?

republicans....payroll tax was 6.2% under Bush ...under Obama they passed it to 4.2 but it was a temporary bill called a holiday as of now the Rep.wouldn't extend the bill so it expired and is now back to 6.2

It wasn't a 2%raise in payroll deductions, there was a 'tax holiday' where 2% was cut. Recently it just rolled back to the previous level.

And yes, we depended on it; it became the norm, now that it's back it feels like another cut to the take home amount.

It does not feel like-it is. You are paying more and taking home less.

And when you retire you will see it back plus more

The benefit provided by that payroll tax cut should have been divvied up in some other way. If it had been maybe we wouldn't all be having kittens now over it's reinstatement . I'd like an explanation from the brains in command why it was a good idea to monkey around with the payroll tax in the 1st place.

Amen to that! They should have left it alone.

Boo-I disagree. The real question: Why are the youth of America so generous? Baby boomers will get out more than they put in. The youth will get out less than they put in.
Report as
Everybody gets more out than they put in. I made the same complaints as a teen, I'm still not eligible but the math is there. There would have to be major reconstruction of SS for you not to get more and the only ones who get less are those who die young

I love how all the liberals make excuses for this tax being raised and everyone getting a smaller pay check. If you just got a job in the past 2 years it was a raise to you. To the rest of us it comes at the worst time.
What really matters is most of us can ill afford to lose part of our pay checks in this economy with prices going up, health care insurance sometimes doubling, state taxes going up, homeowners insurance and taxes rising, food and gas prices sky high and on and on and on. Everybody bend over because they ain't done taking every penny we earn.
