There are different level of orders. Some, the person can remain living with you, but just cannot harm you physically (Domestic Violence Order). Restraining orders higher than this, are usually about the distance that someone can get to you. This can include phone/email contact, trying to contact you through other people, and the physical amount of kilometres that they can get to your body. The more serious, the higher level of protection you can get. If they are found to break any of these restrictions, they will go to court, and likely end up in jail. DVO's are quite difficult to obtain, as you need to provide lots of evidence- such as marks on your body from bashings, witnesses, and possibly written materials (phone texts, emails etc.) It is very difficult, unless the police show up at your house during a bashing, and have to separate him from you. I believe that general restraining orders are much easier to obtain, as you only need written evidence (many phone calls one oafter the other, texts, and emails. Possibly witnessess evidence of him stalking, but it all just depends on what level of restrictions you want placed on him).
