How do you stop thinking about things you don't want to think about?

I'm a person who thinks a lot, and sometimes I'd like to avoid some annoying or worrying thoughts. I guess u could say I'm sorta paranoid.

Yes that is a good way, but what about times I can't? Like I have an exam and I have to study but stupid thoughts keep attacking me?!?!?!

clear your mind, take some deep breaths, and really focus on your studying. realize that these thoughts are just that- thoughts, it's all in your head, and recognize that the studying wont get done unless you shut out these bad thoughts and knuckle down on your priority's. Your in control, you just have to be strong.

You be the one to control your mind.
Whenever you have those thoughts just stop yourself then and there and tell yourself to think about something else...
Or even sing a song or listen to song
Watch Tv
See other people
Keep yourself busy
That should help

think of a word to focus on and then only think of it when you need to distract yourself from other things. I say the word warm to myself as I'm trying to fall asleep. that helps me concentrate on how I feel under the covers and gets my mind off other things that might cause me not to fall asleep.

I used to have the same problem. Find yourself a hobby or a project. We all need distractions to keep the constant worries of our minds occupied.

True, but what if I have those thoughts during I'm doing an activity, like studying?

Studying is the worst distraction(at least for me anyways)
Try doing other activities like working out, playing an instrument, and answering questions on ask.com lol

I know, studying is distracting, but it's something I have to do at times. So u suggest I do something else if stupid thoughts attack while studying?

Jam out some of your favorite tunes while you study and if that's way too distracting. I'd recommend you taking a quick study break by doing some quick floor push ups or go watch a funny YouTube video. I do both and in most times I call up a close friend to have a chat :)

1.) think about something even MORE weird like... when you do talk to yourself and you hear your thoughts, what voice do you hear? is it your voice, is it loud, a whisper... is it even a sound? that always makes me stop talking to myself out of sheer confusion. 2.) It never hurts to read or watch something funny... like what JP822 says - something that makes you happy. 3.) it's not bad to think about things and worry a little - it gets to be a drag though when it starts affecting your life. keep it simple and write the stuff down that you are thinking about. hope this helps!

Most of our thoughts are connected, like say your favorite car, it will automatically popup an image of your favorite car in to your brain, you have to go back, and see what did you really do or see that connects you to thinking that you don't want, like in an old PC you can change the system that operates it, and download new stuff, charge your brain with new stuff.
