your English class has 6 boys to every 5 girls. if your class has a total of 33 students, how many girls are there?

Report as

6x=boys.
5x=girls.
Check: boys/girls=6x/5x=6/5. Yes.
Now we know they total 33 students.
5x+6x=33. Solve for x and plug it in up at the top.

Ratio girls to boys = 5:6 so that's a total of 11 'units' (because 5+6=11)

In a class of 33 there are 3 lots of 11. So increasing the original ratio by a factor of 3 you have 15:16 girls to boys.
