The origins of the conflict are complex, and no single cause can accurately be pointed as the main reason for the fighting. The war was initially fought as a religious conflict between Protestants and Catholics in the Holy Roman Empire. However, disputes over balance of power and internal politics within the Empire played a significant part as well.
