Focus on strength first to build your foundation. Your muscles have a mind of their own in a sense. If you subject them to heavier loads than they are used to, they will adapt to better handle it. Eat plenty of protein and calories, drink plenty of water, do many singles, doubles and triples with as much weight as you can on everything. Focus especially on the squat, dead lift, bench press and clean & press. Going heavy on compound lifts stimulate the pituitary gland very well to build mass all over your body.

8-10. That seems to be the most helpful to me and many others I know.

Just remember going past 10 reps, is for gaining leaner and toned muscles.

Lots of short reps, like 5 sets of 6-8-10 reps, for larger "red"(Rambo) muscle. fewer and longer, like 3 sets of 15 or 18 reps, for stronger sleek "white"(Bruce Lee) muscle.
