The answer is because you can only see in a straight line. The horizon is not really there, it is just where the curvature of the Earth limits your ability to see any further in a straight line. HOWEVER, if you climb up to a very high place, you can see UNTOLD further, but again, you will be limited by the new horizon that has formed. And, as Dark_Matter says, you can see the moon and the Sun and well into the Milky way, but it has to be direct line-of-sight to be visible....
