Gonna have to be a long range weapon most likely cause you gonna have to be really, really, really, good to get close to a coyote unless it wants you to. They can see, hear, and smell wayyy better than you can......and are smart varmints too.

Not true. I know coyote hunters who's main purpose is to call them into shotgun range and only use a rifle as a back up if they won't come in that close.
Report as
That's why I like coyote hunting so much. Got to be on top of your game or your spotted and they bug out.
Report as
From their question it is plain they are not as an experienced hunter as you and others are.... so as a beginner, unless they are with a seasoned hunter.....a rifle has the best chance for a beginner. Oh I've shot them within pistol range.....but you know, like I do, getting that close takes some skill and a tad bit of luck. So with all due respect, I still say a rifle is best for an inexperienced hunter with doubtful skills to have a shot.
Report as
Oh yes, definitely. Beginners in the lack of thier knowledge of not only coyote hunting but coyotes themselves often quit thinking they never call one in cause they didn't know they was busted getting to a stand or if fact has called coyotes and and the coyote busted them and left and the beginner never knew they was there. Also I appreciate the due respect but I'm not arguing, we are just two coyote hunters talking about coyotes and hunting. Do you know predator masters? If you know what it is I'm t/c223encore.
Report as
Oh yeah, almost forgot. Your screen name, Awesome.
Report as
Well, the ' due respect ' was so you wouldn't think I was arguing either....lol. Oh I am no where near the skill needed to call them in.....nor close to your skill either....but I do know alittle something about hunting and coyotes.....I have a running ' contest ' with a local pack....they go after my critters and I go after them. Been kinda quiet lately. Not to say they aren't nearby cause I hear and see them on the neighbors property, but atm I think that they are hunting where there are easier pickings and less chance of high-speed lead poisoning.
Report as
Oh...the screen name is justa reflection of my life...lol

I have a neighbor down the road that calls me when the coyotes are coming in too close. Took 2 out and now a new ones starting to show itself. Those coyotes are hard to get, they know what coyote hunting is as well as I do. You hit to sneak out and get on pidgin and hope they roam in close enough for a shot without a house in the background behind them. By that I mean I don't care if it is 3/4 to a mile, I'm not shooting towards no house for no coyote. And the coyotes are really good at keeping a house behind them when they don't know I'm there and my crosshairs are on them, lol.
Report as
Your animals are just one food area. They don't leave, they just go to another food area. They will be back.
Report as
If you can shoot on your area and got the camo get a hand call and try. It's not hard to call In a coyote, the hard part is not letting them know or find out your there. I bet if you can get in place and try not to move anything buy your eyes you will call one in.
Report as
Or 2 or 3. You never know. One thing, its better to let them get away than shoot and miss. Nothing educates a coyote faster than getting shot at.
Report as
Yeah I know they are nearby.....and I thin the pack every so often but for the most part I co-exist with them but know them well.
Report as
Not much but woods around me but I know where the houses are and like you, never take that shot if it isn't a good one. Last one I missed is a lucky coyote because I found a small tuft of fur with a sliver of skin.....oh so close.
Report as
And that one will be very hard to call in again. Coyote hunters use the term educated cause a coyote can learn and remember. And think and evaluate a situation.

It all depends on where you live... In Colorado coyotes arent as afraid of humans as they once were. I have seen them cross busy roads to get to the other side in a heavily populated subdivision in the MIDDLE of town. Dont need a long range weapon for that.

What you write is true....but considering how folks are freaking out about any weapon, I wouldn't suggest you try to shoot a coyote crossing a busy road in a heavily populated subdivision in the middle of any town with a short range weapon anytime soon. I have shot them within pistol range....in the middle of a open field one just trots out and within 15 ft of me.....looking at me the whole time and I wasn't trying to hide.....I just stood there waiting to see how close it would get....not a smart move for coyote.....but those are rare.

My point was that coyotes are getting braver and braver.

Doesn't always happen at long range. I've taken one at under 10 yards with my bow.

22 lever action
Umm the gun that won the west
Report as
Although it is possible I do not recommend a 22. Coyotes are tough critters that can survive getting shot with a 22.
Report as
Nvmd get a 223.

The best for hunting coyotes would be a .243. This gun can shoot 150 yards easy. It will not blow the coyote apart but it will drop it

That's what I use.
Report as
223 can kill a coyote out to 300 yards. The 204 out to 450 yards the 22-250 out at 500 plus. And yes the 243 is a good coyote caliber as well.

Where I live, 300-500yrd shots are seldom safe because of neighbors, etc. Much over 200yrds, I don't take the shot. I like the .243's knock down power at that range.

The AR-15. Very low recoil and your next shot if needed is right there waiting for you to pull the trigger.
