Ice water (if tolerated) may actually be beneficial in helping to facilitate recovery because you are increasing fluids, which also improves blood volume and helps decrease inflammation of the mucosal linings. Remember the old wives' tale: Feed a cold; Starve a Fever.

Drinking ice water when you have a cold is not detrimental. Colds are caused by viruses, so cold water does not affect the severity of the cold whatsoever. However, breathing in cold air irritates the air passage.
