Any tricks to fall asleep?

I go to highschool so I get up every morning to go to school. I don't fall asleep easily and I am not able to sleep. Any tricks to fall asleep? I have no idea why I cant sleep...

Report as

By far one of the most powerful things you can do is listen to Brain Entrainment music which syncs your brain waves to Theta which is the 1st stage of sleep (in between sleep and wakefulness) The only thing better than that is a baseball bat to the head which comes with it's side effects! I've also outlined really good information in my book "7 Unusual Habits You Need for Good Sleep" which was featured last week on New Jerseys MyWifi1460AM. All of the methods are natural safe and effective. Enjoy!

Wear yourself out before bed time with exercises. Listen to relaxing music or meditation as you go to sleep. Drink milk. DON'T drink soda, coffee, anything with caffeine. If that don't help try Zzzquil, or other safe sleep aids. Try not to think about falling asleep, just relax and let your mind drift.

Geat advice except try to not try sleep aids even if the label says they're safe. If you take a sleep aid, the pay off decreases over time and the human body stops doing its own work - relying instead on the crutch of a sleep aid.

Yeah I know, I would never use them, but some people have to. My dad has sleep apnea and breathing problems, so he takes his prescription and Zzzquil to sleep at night. W/o it, he never gets to sleep.

Make sure you unplug at least 30 minutes before bed. That means everything, tv, computer and phone. do something relaxing like reading taking a hot shower, or petting you dog or cat. If you must listen to music don't listen to anything with a strong beat because that will get your adrenalin going. I know in high school you won't think it is cool, but classical music, (Beethoven, not the Beatles) actually is really good for relaxing your mind and body.

My top 3 ways of falling asleep are listening to ambient music(Stars of the Lid), jazz(Charlie Christian, Louis Armstrong), or smoking a little pot(definitely not on school nights though!!). Reading never works for me because I get into the book and am up till 4 AM reading.

I would strongly recommend listening to music by "Enya"... An excellent "compilation" CD of hers is called "Paint the Sky with Stars". It works for me, and I have terrible insomnia... P.S. I completely agree about silence, jet black room, NO caffeine (perhaps EVER if you're sensitive to it -- it is a VERY powerful stimulant) And yes, a shower just before bed to help you relax and feel all warm and cozy. Finally, yes, surprisingly important: NO late night TV, computer or cell phone browsing -- our species did not evolve with artificial light around us at night! It was starlight or warm firelight at most...

One last thing, for the truly desperate: consider the possibility that you may need medical help to quiet your brain at night. See your family doctor or a licensed psychiatrist and ask about prescriptions for lorazepam and zolpidem. The two meds must be alternated day-by-day, with "one day off" each week, or your body will get used to them and they'll stop working.

Example -- take lorazepam each Monday, Wednesday, & Friday; take zolpidem each Tuesday, Thursday, & Saturday. On Sundays, take neither.

(Do NOT increase dosages beyond what the doc prescribes, because both these medications are powerful barbituates & addiction is possible.)

Be careful out there, and good luck!

When I was pregnant, I read in a book that when it is hard to sleep you should tell your body that it is tired. For example, say, "my feet are asleep, my feet are asleep, my feet are asleep." Do that for each body part up to the top of your head and it usually helps.

Electronic stimuli activate a part of your brain that will stay active for an hour or more effecting you going to sleep, so turn games etc off.
Melatonin is safe but can cause weird dreams.
A hot bath or shower helps.
The best trick I was taught to shut your brain down- go over each thing that is running through your mind. Ask yourself is this my issue or does it belong to someone else.
If it is your isssue, does it need to be dealt with now? If not plan when you can deal with it the let it go. If necessary deal with it before going to bed.

Insomnia is more than just maddening. It can affect you in many ways. These three things have been tried and true for many many years in the adults and children in my family and friends. The first one and of course the one that works best is right before bedtime go eat something with raw onions, either a sandwich with them or tuna salad with heavy onions whatever you like, this does work but you may have the odor in the morning too.the next trick I do is heat a cup of milk add sweetener to taste and 1/2 - 1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring. It can be artificial flavoring, that is just to help the taste ,the warm milk is the secret. Finally turn off all electronic - tv computer- radio- cell phones lie in a darkened room close your eyes and visualize someone you trust giving you a massage (not an intimate or sexual)of your facial bones ,hair and neck arms and hands and feet toes.I fully believe you will be able to have success with these ideas.I have never known them to miss, the onions seem to work miraculously.

Go back over your day from bedtime to arising and confess to the Father all the times you were not loving and resolve to be more loving on the next day. This will help erase the karma you created when you were non-loving and unburden your subconscious mind, preparing you for sleep. You can also repeat in your mind a mantram like, Lord Christ Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on us. Or God, Christ, Jesus.

Also find yourself an ethical spiritual teacher. Actually, this should be first.

`Years ago when I worked the midnight shift. Input a fan in my bedroom. I did it mostly to mask the noise outside. By doing so I only have one noise(White Noise) instead of many. I just concentrate on that one noise and I'm out in minutes. I use the high setting and most of the time it even masks out my thoughts. That was my problem, I couldn't get my mind to stop when I wanted to sleep. Still today after 40 some years I still use it and it still works.

One thing that I have found really helpful was lying down in bed and breathing deeply. Start with your feet and think about your feet. What do they do? Move up your body and keep thinking about what that part of your body does and what you used it for in that day. Make sure you are breathing deeply. Another thing that really helped me was doing something small with my hands. Lie down in bed and move your hands around in the most random movements. Don't move any body part but your hands and concentrate on breathing deeply. I am also in high school, although I don't go to sleep until around one in the morning due to my AP classes. I take multiples of them and I went to a therapist to find out ways and this is what she suggested for me.

I would take 3 mg of melatonin at first till you know how it affects you. You can have some pretty intense dreams if you are not used to it. It puts you in REM (deep stage of sleep). It works but some people can't handle the strange dreams....Take it with warm milk. Always talk to your Dr first, I've had no side effects. Some people take too much. I started with 3 mg and never had to increase and have been taking it for years. You must work with it and relax, no lights or noises, distractions. You might also try valerian root. These are only temporary solutions, til you train your body to sleep well again Good luck

Couple of ideas. This I learned watching The Mentalist on TV. Count your breath, count 1 as you breathe in, count 2 as you breathe out, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2. It helps you breathe better and it is boring. It really works for me. Dont count sheep or anything else where you lose count and get aggravated with yourself, just 1,2,1,2.
Also, I found out that bananas have the same thing that turkey has that makes you sleepy, tryptophan or something like that, so eat a banana just before going to bed.
Sometimes when I wake up at night and can't go back to sleep, I have a small bowl of a light cereal, like rice crispies or rice checks with milk or almond milk.

As your eyes become heavy turn off the light and relax into your most comfortable position. Remember to keep your jaw loose...don't tense up your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Keep your breathing as deep breaths not little shallow ones. If that doesnt work, picture your mind like a completely black room except for numbers you are counting down from 10 to 1. They flash as you count down and it should relax you enough to fall asleep. Whatever you do, do not think of things that give you anxiety.

I am an insomniac and sleepwalker when I manage to sleep. I tried all kinds of OTC / Homeopathic and RX meds without success. The only advice that ever helped me was to run the alphabet or numbers through my mind. As I do that, create a mental picture of each character.
I was told that this employs both sides of the brain. If your mind is busy doing this you will not have that racing mind thing that will keep you awake. If you continue to do this each night the monotony of this exercise will cause you to fall asleep faster over time.
Good luck

You have received some wonderful responses. Hopefully you have tried what sounded good to you and it worked. I have to admit I haven't read every single one of them so my apologies if I double up on some sleeping advise.
There are a couple of keys. #1 - Have a nightly routine so you are prepared to sleep once your head hits your pillow. Keep the time roughly the same as this forms a habit. This could be anything, have a drink, have a shower, go to the loo, read a book - I'm sure you get the drift. #2 - Make your room as dark as possible, even going to the point of covering any lights on the TV, computer, alarm clock etc they glow brightly in the dead on night.
There are plenty of relaxation techniques and Apps available, plenty for free - try out various methods and find one that works for you.
I'll leave you with one last thought - The more you focus on something the more of it you get. So rather than focusing on the fact you can't sleep, focus on the wonderful relaxing soft and cuddly bed you're about to get into that will lull you into a beautiful and peaceful sleep.
Good luck with your sleeping and your schooling.

Lay in total darkness and clear your mind of every thought except pleasant ones ie, sex, beautiful weather, dancing, etc. Works for me all the time, soon I find myself enjoying dreams and laughing.

I had the same problem until I tried this trick: Lay flat on your back and place your arms to your side. Slowly start to relax everything until you are completely relaxed (including your mind.)

Try: warm milk; warm chamomile tea; drink/eat no stimulant about 3 hours before bedtime; take a walk or other mild exercise about 1 1/2 hours before bedtime; take 3 mg. Melatonin (6 mg if over about 40 yrs. old); shut off electronics for an hour or so; deep-breathing for 1-2 minutes; or try prayer (I thank God for 3 good things that day) or meditate. Get a routine and use which of these all that work. Night.

The best way to fall a sleep at night is to step into it gradually. you have to understand this so you don't trick your self.
1-Stop watching TV an hour or so before sleeping. that includes YouTube in your phone or any other device.
2- Avoid activities that needs fast reaction so you don't stay alerted. like gaming, fights, worrying about tomorrow.
3- dimming the light and slow breathing would help a lot only if you tried to focus on your breathing technique. Try to reach to an equilibrium level of inhaling and exhaling while relaxing. keep focus on relaxing your muscle and imagining your breathing.
4- put your phone into Silence mode to cut all interruptions

Prepare your body and your sleeping space. Avoid stimulants such as coffee and some teas before bed, since they can interfere with your body's ability to help you get to sleep. Darken your room as much as possible, as light can affect the body's ability to prepare for and execute proper sleep. Close all doors and, if possible, have full opaque blinds over any windows in the room.

A lot of answers on falling asleep focus on lifestyle. But what if generally you sleep well but find yourself in bed unable to sleep? For example, on a plane, before a big day etc.

By far the most powerful tool you have to work with is your mind its self ! There r several Techs. of relaxation and dealing with pain mentally or physiologically .About the easiest I can think of is to use ur mind eyes to see a small black ball floating in the air..... consentratte on the black ball, as you take deep breaths in thru your nose n out your mouth (on your exhale let tension run from your feet n ankles ....and the ball gets slowly closer you breath in thru nose .. out thru mouth an allow tention to run from cakves and knees .. you will feel a very sutle change is your bodys tention as u continue up yje ladder breathinh in n out the ball growing closer and closer as more n more of you body relaxes with a little practice u can b sound asleep in under 10 mins..... GOOD LUCK GREAT KARMA 2 U DA GURU

As with many students you are busy...one must be consistent...sleep is best gained by same time down and same time up...drink a glass of pure water pre-sleep, 6 oz and 12 oz at wake up...Works for me.
