we went to Cancun 3 yrs ago in January. It was better than expected. The tourist areas were constructed with good infrastructure (safe drinking water, good roads, cheap bus and taxi service). High end luxury hotels, shopping and good restaurants and close to the airport. Old town was fun to explore and beaches are great. Had no problems except not a long enough stay in Cancun.
With anyplace in Mexico, you need to be very careful, because of the drug wars, that are going on! These drug lords don't care who the kill, so I won't go there anymore!!! Which is too bad, as it was a lovely place. The Bahamas are nice, as are The Virgin Islands, or Arruba!!!
I have been to Cancun and Xel-ha. Mexico. I love the beach and how warm the water was. There was so much to do that everyday was an adventure. I would definately recomend it. Is on the expensive side though.
I visited Paradise Island in the Bahamas. I think it's called Atlantis now. The natives, not all, but many don't like the tourists. They wrote Americans Go Home on the wall in the hotel bathroom. I rather spend my vacation money in the good ol' US.
