What are your thoughts about the Death Penalty?

I think there should be a death penalty because people who are in prison for life have no life ahead of them. The government wastes money, food, and protection on people who will die in jail.

This is one of those questions that will only create controversy. Some people do some really heinous things. Ted Bundy was one.... He raped and killed A LOT of people. Oh, he was put in prison too. OH, he escaped at least twice from prison. He was an incredibly intelligent person. He even taught people how to criminally profile someone. He even asked to be put to death because he said.... If I am out, I will kill again. Some people just cant be helped... Putting them out of their misery is often times what THEY want. Not just what the justice system wants.

I don't get it. I mean everyone dies, so how is that a punishment? It's barbaric to kill people.

It costs less to keep them in prison for life.

Actually it costs WAY more to keep then in prison for life. If Charles Manson was executed like he should have been.... We would have saved TONS of money. I say WE because TAXPAYERS pay for them to live the life they have.
Report as
Exactly what I said Neanderthal. Spot on.
Report as
I have always heard it was more expensive to kill them. Either way, I don't think we should be putting a monetary value on someone's life. What really needs to be done is find better methods of rehabilitation.
Report as
Some people cannot and will not be rehabilitated though. Some people REALLY need to be put to death. Sorry if you feel different but.... that is the way I see it. Why was it ok for Sharon Tate, her baby, and the others to be killed in the brutal way they were?
Report as
Of course it wasn't okay, but it is important to follow the story from the beginning. What caused them to act the way they did? Did they(Manson didn't kill the victims) have psychological illnesses? Also, having the mindset that some people can't be helped is self defeating. Maybe we could figure out an effective method that works a good deal of the time. I am against killing a man in cold blood because what's the difference between that and what they did?
Report as
There doesnt need to be a difference. Manson brainwashed these people. Manson gave them LSD. Manson led these incredibly vulnerable people to his way of thinking. He had amazing insight to people. Enough insight to create monsters out of people that would not, in ordinary circumstances, do what they did. Keeping him alive at taxpayers expense is an insult to everyone that pays taxes.

I think the fact that it is considered cruel and unusual punishment is unfair. It's cruel and unusual punishment to make taxpayers pay for twisted individuals to receive their 3 square meals a day and live sheltered and clean, while we have starving people on the streets who can obey our laws, and keep themselves out of trouble. Isn't that punishing them too? I believe in the death penalty 100%, and if that makes me a bad person, so be it. I can be judged at the pearly gates for my opinions. You who disagree have no right to judge me.

I, for one, do not think you are a bad person. I think you have a very good point and I agree with it.

Well, thank you! I quite liked your answer, and absolutely agree with it.

Until the day comes that you can guarantee that an innocent person will never be convicted for a crime they did not commit, I could never consider supporting a death penalty.

first of all, what you said about the death penalty in your question is openly fallacious, it costs more to kill one inmate with the death penalty, than it does for them to pay for food, clothing, protection, etc, for that person's maximum sentence of 99 years, life in prison actually is a cheaper sentence. Now, that being said, i think the death penalty should exist, but should only be used in very specific cases, where there is no room in the prison for that person, or that facility is not secure enough, essentially, in order for me to support it, it would have to be the only way to keep them out of society. In reality, the death penalty is an easy way out punishment, there are things far worse than a quick and almost painless death. For instance, in the case of a rapist, i firmly believe he should be castrated and left to rot for the rest of his life until natural death, that is a punishment, but a painless lethal injection, or firing squad shooing you, is not a very good one, and also, it does not reflect well on a society to be a culture of death.

Wow... castration. A bit morbid, though completely understandable. An eye for an eye I suppose.
Report as
no, not really morbid at all, i am a martial artist, so i believe in honor, and i believe men should act as men, if a man becomes a monster, and does such a harm to Woman, his partner in life and helpmate, whom he was charged with protecting, because she is the ultimate gift which God gave him, then he should no longer have the faculty which distinguishes him as a man.
Report as
Fair enough. Just the initiat shock of the comment I suppose. Seems like a bit much, until the reasoning is taken into consideration, then it makes a bit more sense.
Report as
yeah, i can see how a guy saying that another guy should be castrated is pretty shocking

I think it should be voluntary, depending on the crime. But if someone is in for life with no parole than they should have a choice to be given the death penalty and even request the method of death. They chose to mess up their life, they should have the choice to end it after their sentence is carried out.

Good question. I would like to be against the death penalty but then see events like the shooting in Connecticut and think I could push the button on that guy myself and sleep very well that night. There are some people who have simply proven they don't belong on the face of this earth.

But then you hear about people who were wrongly convicted and were on death row. Is it better to have several people rotting in jail for the rest of their lives than to execute one innocent person? I've come to the conclusion that life in jail with no chance of parole is no picnic. That gives that person an entire lifetime to think about what they did and recognize the fact that they will never see the light of day as a free person.

I mean, if sentenced to seath row people should know beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are guilty, then we wouldn't have the problem. DNA and such does help immensely nowadays, so worrying about wrongful convitctions is getting to be less of a problem (thankfully) And I completely agree with you about the fellow from Ct. I could probably have taken care of him myself and been utterly satisfied and not worried in the least.

Mixed feelings on this. There should be, but only if say, the person murdered someone and the family wants to not worry about him/her anymore. This is also because jail babies the criminals. However the death penalty is an easy way out, and they should suffer in this life. Jail should be a punishment, not a vacation.

Personally, this is very difficult to answer. Usually, my thinking is this: if someone intentionally commits murder that is not self-defense, or manslaughter but actually purposely killed someone or was criminally negligent concerning someone who was dying then I think they should be given the death penalty. I mean it's only fair: if you don't have a problem killing people, or witnessing someone being killed & not alerting the authorities then you shouldn't have a problem with being killed! But then again, that might defeat the whole picture or purpose of things. After all, if we all killed those who killed others, then someone could kill us for retribution of that killer & they would have just cause because technically, we would be a killer too. So ... it's a fine line to cross/walk. Also, there is the thing about convicting & sentencing & executing someone who might be innocent of said crimes. If we all killed someone because they killed someone else, then the human race would be out of existence. Keep this in mind: an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.

Some people are so evil that the only just punishment is death. They are so evil that they are lucky they are not tortured before death, like they did years ago. It is no deterrent I agree, but neither is life in prison a deterrent . Get rid of them, that way they don't contaminate the world anymore.

It's not being upheld according to law .Thats why we have so much killings if they up held the law and executed rapist murderers and child molesters we would have a thing in the world to worry about
