why do many people dislike pitbulls?

most people would just see none and start saying stuff.i think its based on how their trained.i have a pitbull (the one in my picture) and shes very friendly, she is protective but still behaves well.shes never mean to children or adults.so why do youthink people dont.like them?

People don't like them because they are the most dangerous of domesticated dogs, which is a fact and not based on ignorance. Pit owners always think their dog is sweet....until it kills someone else's dog. Actually, even after that they think the dog is sweet.

This is such an ignorant answer these dogs are trained to attack they are not born that way

False, they are not the most dangerous dogs. Akita and Rottweilers are more dangerous.

@Jonathan and Iasked: According to the CDC, pit bulls are responsible for more deaths than any other breed AS A PERCENTAGE OF THEIR POPULATION. All breeds are capable of attacking without warning. However, because pit bulls were initially bred for incredible bite strength, a high pain threshold, and a shake-and-tear propensity, they do more significant damage in a shorter amount of time than any other breed. Handlers will tell you that these dogs need more training, socialization, and a strong and consistent display of owner dominance than other breeds. It is my fear that people see them as cute little puppies and do not understand the responsibility they are taking on when it comes to the their own safety, the safety of others, and the dog's own well-being.

Wrong. Pit bulls can be wonderful dogs with the right owners. Even if the dog is aggressive, the right owner would mussel the dog to make sure nothing ever happened. I know many Pit Bulls who are Service Dogs and many Pit Bulls who are certified Therapy Dogs who have never attacked anyone. I've also known people who owned Pit Bulls from the time they were born through to the time they died of old age who never ever showed any kind of aggression and had their CGC. It's not all in the breeding. You wouldn't buy a dog from an amazing breeder and expect it to be the best dog in the world without training or good ownership, that would just be stupid. The same reason you wouldn't just get a Pit Bull puppy and expect it to mall everyone in sight just because some of their breeding was to be aggressive. (Which now a day there are tons of breeders breeding for good temperament)

@xxx: That is exactly why I said, "these dogs need more training, socialization, and a strong and consistent display of owner dominance than other breeds." I did not say they cannot be wonderful pets. They can if appropriate actions are taken as they are raised. That this or that dog has never shown aggressive tendencies is purely anecdotal. Owners of pit bulls which attack often describe their dogs as always having been friendly and loving pets.

I have a pit bull as well. A lot of people hear news about pit bulls attacking people on the tv and such. They have a bad rep because people often choose them for fighting dogs. It's ignorant and stupid though for people to judge the whole breed on the bad training of a few.

Many ordinary people who live ordinary lives have dogs who occasionally bite people unexpectedly despite having been raised in a loving home where all the rules of training and socialization have been followed. But the reason we hear news reports about pit bull attacks rather than other breeds is because pit bulls have a genetic propensity to not stop at just biting. Once they are provoked to attack--regardless of whether that provocation is justified--they are all in. They clamp down and do not let go until significant damage, or even death, results. They can have a shovel slammed down on their skull without effect such is their tolerance for pain. Anyone who chooses such a dog as a pet is akin to someone who keeps a loaded weapon hidden away somewhere in the house. There is always a chance that the unthinkable will happen.

Pit bulls are great dogs. On of my favorite photos is of me (at about 2 years of age) and our pit bull curled up together and sleeping on the sofa.

@Strawberry: Exactly. Those who defend pit bulls as pets will inevitably bring up the statistic that chihuahuas are more likely to bite than pit bulls. But when one looks at the CDC dog bite statistics, one will find that, as a percentage of a breed's population, pit bulls are far more likely to maim or kill than any other breed.

Pitbulls have a reputation for biting people and their jaws are very strong there sometimes uses as gard dogs and fitting dogs so people are known for their destruction but they are very nice dogs and if trained badly they are aggressive but a vary vary good breed

I contend that it isn't about bad training, but that pit bull owners are often unaware of (or ignore) the fact that these dogs need much more training, socialization, and strong, consistent displays of dominance by their masters than other breeds. Unlike most other breeds, pit bulls do not stop at just biting. That is why it is so important to never allow for the possibility of that first bite, because there will most likely be no chance of a second bite, given the damage that will result and the resulting litigation.

Pit bulls are the most misunderstood breed in the world,
it is actually not their fault though, it is the person who handles them. most owners abuse them and put them in vigorous fights and is passed down by generation. but also, their muscular figure is quite intimidating. although they are frightening, if you treat them with respect and compassion, they will end up being the best friend you ever had (:

To speak in terms of it being "not their fault" is to imbue the dog with human characteristics of right and wrong. Nothing is a dog's "fault" just as it is not a tornado's fault that a house it destroyed. It just is what it is. The best we can do is deal with the realities of forces of nature.

I think it's because they've just gotten a bad rap. There have been some violent attacks, no doubt, by them. But what people don't take the time to realize is that those dogs were TAUGHT to be that way. Some of the sweetest dogs I've known are pitbulls. People have been conditioned to think that they're just naturally mean dogs and do not know how ridiculous that is. It's all in the owner

I like my daughter's pit bull very much and promised to take her if anything ever happened to my daughter. That said, they are powerful animals that need extra care and attention. As someone else stated, their little dog isn't going to kill them with one bite. These dogs can. Big dogs equal big responsibility.

pit bulls were bred to handle stock, more specifically dangerous bulls, they were meant to be working dogs, not pets. We've had 3 attacks on horses, one was a pack, the other 2 were pitbulls. I had a neighbor whose 4 yr old was killed by the family pet pitbull and they had the dog for years. It "loved" the child. I have a zero tolerance policy on any dog coming onto my property but I tend to make sure any pit bulls stay down.
the following excerpt explains WORKING dog.
When English immigrants came to America, their dogs came with them. Not surprisingly, dog fighting was common in America throughout the 19th century. However, as the immigrants traveled west, the pit bull took on a broader and more humane function. On the frontier, pit bulls assumed the role of an all-purpose dog. In addition to herding cattle and sheep they served as faithful guardians, protecting families and livestock from the ever-present threat of thieves and wild animals.

Pit Bulls, as well as any other breed that has been bred for dog fighting, are genetically more dangerous for a number of reasons. They have been bread for bite strength (locking jaw is a myth), persistence, shake-and-tear, and a high tolerance for pain. While such breeding is not the norm anymore, the genetics are still there. This means that even if they are as unlikely to attack as other dogs, they can do more damage in a shorter amount of time when they do.

If one chooses to have a pit bull as a pet (cute as they might be as little puppies), they assume these risks and must be willing to engage in the extra obedience training, socialization and strong, consistent displays of dominance that are not as critical with other breeds. When I see one in a dog park or being walked down the street, I can't help but wonder whether or not that particular owner is one of those who understands these risks and has devoted the extra time, money, and effort necessary to properly raise the dog. But then I wonder that about most dog owners.
