Should organ donation be mandatory for all American citizens?

I have a project at school and need pros and cons to my topic...

No, I don't think so. I have nothing against organ donating but I think it should be a choice. People are losing freedom as it is all the time. We are losing slowly all rights. Leave it a choice to the individual.

Well, I wouldn't want a liver transplant from an alcoholic haha! It'd be great if everybody volunteered, but we don't need the govt dictating that we HAVE to do it.

No, there's many cons to this. People who smoke and have bad organs, people who have stds(if that does anything) and many more but I'm too lazy to write

nooooooooo! organ donation is mostly by family members and close family members of the patient to avoid tissue rejection_,, there is no raeson to deprive others_

as a heart transplant patient I think more people should donate,when your dead your not using the organ anymore,I was a organ donor for years and never expected needing a organ myself

I agree people should want to donate but not be forced. Happy to hear you were fortunate enough to receive a heart and are doing well. It's a very emotional surgical case to be part of harvesting organs. However, getting follow up letters telling us people were saved is comforting.

No. There are a number of factors that play a role in donating organs. You should look up your local Life gift or Organ Donor group. Any local hospital would be able to give you the number. Donors are usually from brain death or cardiac death. In the event of a cardiac death organs must be harvested with the first 24 hours and only the liver and kidney are taken. In the event of a brain death a series of tests are done to prove the brain no longer is functioning. Donors with brain death are kept on ventilator until all organs and tissue are harvested.

I don't think so, you figure many people's organs might not be worth anything depending in the life they've lived also where would you store all those organs? feel free to be a donor if you want but it shouldn't be mandatory.
