My dog is 16 yrs old he's blind and pisses on himself, I still care for my dog. Am I wrong if I try to put him to sleep?

Report as

How many people do you need to answer this for you Larry?? I agreed with the person that said you are wrong if you DONT put the dog to sleep. Your dog lived a really long time. You obviously took real good care of your dog. Do what YOUR heart tells you to do. I have 5 dogs.... I would find it very hard to put any of them down.

You are by no means wrong for putting your dog down. It is probably going through a lot of pain. I suggest making your dog comfortable in a quiet place in the backyard, calling the vet, and having him put down. It's like in Of Mice And Men, you'll be happy you did the right thing for your dog.

If his life is spent suffering, then no. It's not wrong. Quality of life is important and no one, animal or human being should live without it.

all the years you depended on him and now this dog is depending on you-though i am not a christian i reccomed you ask the advise of the church authorities and abide by them-
Report as
What about what the vet thinks is best for the dog? I am a Christian, and I think the church would say that the dog should not suffer. What happened to, "Rest In Peace"?
Also, sorry to be picky, but it's advice not advise.
Report as
advise or advice does not matter much here -you are faced with a dilama and help less and if you seek their advice then there is no ACCOUNTABILITY ON YOUR PART and you are not incurring any sin- this is a seniors view-pl think
Report as
Why do you value the Church's opinion on medical matters more than that of someone who is trained in how to take care of animals? I am not criticising, I am just stating my opinion, senior, and I have also taken yours into consideration. Why blame the Church if something is done wrong? Yes, you cannot be accountable, but the same thing could be said if you take the vet's advice. Mull over that, if you will.

my dear sir have not seen so many items in paper where persons adopt animals and birds suffering from serious diseases -after all the dog at this point of time is helpless and depends on you-any way as far as i am concerned i would feel i am duty bound to take care of him.i am from india and this how we care them here -pl think twice before you take any hasty decision after all it was a part of your family-i am not trying to be emotional but if it happens to you what will be the reaction of your kids-will they take care of you live you in lurch-pl find out if any remedy still exist

I kind of thought there was something more personal behind your position, kven. Dogs aren't like people--they aren't afraid to pass on. When they can't even get up to pee, they are in pain and having no joy in life. It is not a sin to be kind, and release them from the pain. In fact, we are the only ones who can do it and we must! Let me share a poem with you that expresses very beautifully what I am saying:
IF IT SHOULD BE

If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand.
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years.
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so;
The time has come -- please let me go.

Take me where my need they'll tend,
And please stay with me till the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Please do not grieve -- it must be you
Who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years;
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

It may be possible, but then again it may not, depending where he lives.

Thank you, I think they are words to live by vis a vis our pets.

Larry, I shouldn't judge and say if he can't get up to pee he is in pain, maybe he isn't. First of all, consult a vet. Then you decide what's best for your friend, not what's best for you, but what's best for your friend.

@kvenkarachalam: I also thought you were speaking on a personal level, I am disappointed that you feel that way, that the dog's suffering should be prolonged; however you are free to think whatever you like.

If the vet thinks he should be put down, then it's the best thing to do. It may seem hard, but it would be kindest for your dog. I am so sorry for you.

I have a family friend thats dog is in the same situation. She's not suffering so the doctor gave them something to help with the bathroom situation. But take your dog to the doctor and see if he's suffering and see what the vet says. They'll know best.

Would you want to live like that? Answer that and you will know what to do. It would be the humane thing to do. (This would be after you've been to the vet with him).

Ask your vet, he or she has tons of experience with this. Everyone dies, we must accept that....

Only put him to sleep if you think it is a serious problem. It is your dog so it is your choice. My best friend had a dog that was 18 w/ the same problem . My best friend also has a 6 year old dog that hasn't walked on his own since he was 3. He still goes to the bathroom on his puppy training pads. They have to hold him up to give him water and food. He has to sit on the couch every second of every day. That dog has made it far and yours can too.

But my question is: is that dog happy with that life? The care and concern your friend and his family shows to the 6 year-old dog is heroic and deserves praise, but I just have to wonder how the dog feels about it. Dogs are naturally active and joyous. If he is happy, more power to them all, if he is alone and helpless during the day while they are all gone, that is sad.

The vet says that he is not in pain and it is heroic that they care for this dog while they also had an 18 year old dog that was blind and deaf from old age. 18 year old also just passed. Now they have the disabled dog and a non disabled. The disabled dog try's to move with the front of his body but he doesn't get very fare :( he doesn't have enough strength to even lift his head up but he has gotten through for the last 3 years!!
Report as
The doctors can't even tell what is wrong with him and the dog has gone through many surgeries
Report as
Wow, his family really loves him. Have they tried to find wheels for his back end? There has been some remarkable success with disabled dogs having wheels for their back legs--gives them terrific mobility. How sad that the vets can't figure it out. Animal science isn't as advanced as what we humans enjoy.
