There are a number of reasons, and some have been explored on various programs on the History Channel as well.

The stories in the bible were written over thousands of years buy more different people than you can imagine.

It was not written as one book, but different people wrote different " books " that at later dates were combined in the " bible "

Secondly, many of the stories in the Old Testament were actually taken from older cultures such as the Sumarians so whenever you have oral histories or stories passed down over time, things change.

It depends on which contradiction you're referring to.
Sometimes, what appears to be contradictory information actually comes more from misinterpretation or misapplication.
If you can tell me exactly which verses you feel contradict each other, I may be able to offer a better answer

I don't know which passage their from in general. I know the bible says incest, rape, murder, jealousy are wrong but then it talks about those such things like its ok. The two daughters who lived in a cave with their father got him drunk and had sex with him (Adultery, incest) That dude that "god" told to kill his son and he did, theres so much jealousy..

Coralplumber, you have had some good answers about the Bible, where do you get your info?

Oh! These are excellent examples.
You are talking about Lot and his two daughters who were told to leave Soddom before it was destroyed. Lot's sons-in-law refused to obey and were destroyed in Soddom, and his own wife disobeyed the instructions by turning around during their fleeing (representing a spiritual return to sinful ways) and was turned into a pillar of salt.
When lot and his daughters reached the cave, all of their mates had been destroyed, so there was no adultery. But there WAS incest, as his daughters got himdrunk and both became pregnant by their own father.
Here's what's important to know about this: the son of one of the daughters was named Moab, the other named Ammon. From these two sons, conceived through incestuous relations, came the Moabites and the Ammonites, both groups of people being in violent opposition to the isrealites. So incest, while reported as having occurred in the bible, was not condoned. In fact, this detestable behavior was shown to make lasting trouble for gods people.
The other guy was Abraham. He waited forever to be given his son issaac, who had been promised by god. When he finally came, god asked him to offer him as a sacrifice, which Abraham prepared to do, in obedience to god. However god stopped Abraham from killing his son, and they sacrificed a ram instead. This passage shows a foreshadowing of god himself (represented by Abraham) allowing his son Jesus (represented by Isaac) to be sacrificed. Isaacs willingness at the altar to be sacrificed by Abraham is representative of christs willingness to be sacrificed for us.

I think you should quit while you are ahead with your first answer.
You are completely wrong in equating the Old Testament stories and characters as if they have any meaning or bearing on Jesus. Jesus was Jewish. He did not write, practice or preach any New Testament books. That came after. What was in the Old Testament is what it is, and what is in the New Testament is what it is.

Your metaphor of Abraham / God/ Isaac/ Jesus is nonsense.

Thanks, caboose. I've been studying for about a year and a half with some very close and well qualified friends. They are a wealth of information, and have provided me with a library full of reference tools for answering anything you could think to ask. These tools are widely available to anyone just for the asking
I enjoy answering peoples questions as it is an opportunity for mention study and learn as well.

Always a kind word miramar, thank you. In fact there are many instances where christs coming is foretold in the old testament. And the gospels are full of his very words. He himself would use teachings from the old testament to explain new ideas which were recorded in the gospels. So using old testament in conjunction with the new testament is a solid practice.

Only if you believe in the New Testament. And only if you believe Jesus was the son of god. Which most people on the planet do not.

And most Christians also do not accept your version of events either, which is why there are so many denominations and belief structures

On the gospels they are not contradictory, just 4 different peoples way of telling the same story. For example, Luke was a Dr. So he would talk about things from a medical standpoint, but be assured, they are not contradictions, because 2 Timothy 3:16 says: "All scripture is inspired of God...." so it is the way people interpret the scriptures as to why it SEEMS to be contradictory. :)

I think it is like:

If you had four people standing on four different street corners at an intersection. Each person see a different perspective. This applies to the Gospels.
Please give me some of the verses that you have concerns about.
I very impressed you are looking into what you should believe.
