A lot! Did you know the primary reason for the emancipation proclamation was not an idealistic moral crusade, but was instead a rational political strategy? During the US civil war cotton was the oil of Europe, since the union navy had successfully blockaded southern ports cotton prices in Europe sky-rocketed. Riots were common place and European governments were considering sending their navies to lift the blockades and aid the rebels. By enacting the emancipation proclamation Lincoln turned the war into a moral one instead of an economic one, thereby silencing the threat from Europe.

I know that he was awesome, my favorite president. I know that the Civil War was included in a song "Gone" by Montgomery Gentry: "Gone like a soldier in the Civil War, BANG BANG!" :o
