Because the dyes in colored clothing will wash out a little each time you wash them this is called "bleeding" Then the lighter colored clothing will get stained from these dyes in the water and if they touch the other colors. So you should have at least 3 seperate groups.. Darks, whites/lpastel, and brighter colors. I usually have a 4th group "bleachables" which are generally kitchen towels, white socks, etc that can be bleached w/o damaging the garment or bleaching away any color that might be in them.
