After 12 yrs without one, I'm (finally) getting a puppy!!! What's the best/easiest way to show her WHERE I want her to go potty?

She's 6, named Gracie. 40-45 lbs. I have a very small back yard to my apt. I was hoping to find a way to train her to go on a doggie potty (flat pan on floor with catchers for urine. Some have fake grass) place inside, since I have problems walking any distance (plus the cold). Also I work every day. Anybody have any experience with indoor potties for a med. sized dog?

We have two dogs at home. I usually will put potty pads by the back slider door and they are good at going on it there, after going on potty pads for a while I started using newspaper in the same spot to save some money and they will go on that as well. You should definitely try potty pads. They had them once at the 99cent Only store, not dollar tree. They sell them of course at petco, petsmart & Ive got them a lil cheaper at walgreens. Hope this helps :)

How big are your dogs? Are the potty pads too small for a medium dog?
Report as
No you should be fine, my dogs are medium dogs, about 30 ish pounds at least... and they seem to be a descent size pad. I think they might have xtra large sizes if you go to pet stores if you needed a bigger size.

every once in a while they will go right next to the pad!! errks the heck out of me! So its not guarenteed it will work, but ours go on it about 95% of the time! lol

Well, you have to be sure that you take your dog out for a walk and watch for signs! :)

For me (our dog is now 10 mon.) the pads as mentioned worked great. By shifting them a little each day you can get your dog to eventually go to where you want. Make slight changes toward whatever you wish to finally use as a collector.

Got it. Is your dog small or medium? I'm afraid the pads or even the puppy potty will be too small... ????

Our dog hasn't used on the pads for 5 months now. At present she uses outdoors. She was about 13 lbs. when we had her trained away from the pads.

I now realise that size may be a problem for you. At present we are able to tie ours to a leash at the door, without us actually having to go out. I don't know if that idea might work in your case.

Not good because... Maybe because of germs?

It's just a bad habit in my opinion, you're teaching him that it's ok to go inside when it goes against their nature to go inside...dogs need to go outside for fresh air as well, being caged up inside a house builds up a lot of stress in dogs!

I meant go inside a litter box *....digs will go wherever they please on your house if you let them:)

You can't attach a lead outside?? Dogs are fine in the cold as long as you don't leave them out unattended !! Some breeds can stay out longer than others obviously !!
