Why does teachers always be mean then nice?

like at first they are mean at the beginning of the school year an then they are nice almost at the end can someone help me on this question?

They are mean at the beginning of the school year so the students won't think they are pushovers. They are nice at the end of the year because they have gotten to know you and you've had a journey together of a sort.

THey want to show the kids that they are not intimidated by a bunch of kids but they slack off towards the end of the year.
