How do I get the volume control buttons to work on a Dell Inspiron 2500 with a fresh install of Windows XP

I have this old Dell Inspiron 2500 from the late 1990's or early 2000's. It was running Windows 2000 and there the volume buttons work but that's because it was the factory install of it. So now, I'm wondering how I can get them to work, because quite frankly it's a pain in the butt to have to go down, click the sound icon, and wait for it to open and then change it. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!!!

You can try to get the volume buttons to work by going to Computer then Desktop Preferences and click on Keyboard Shortcuts. Assign the volume up, down and mute buttons to the appropriate actions within.
