Depends what u want to do with it. For a basic computer look to spend about 500-700$ for a gaming/photo & video editing look for higher end computers in the 900+ range. For macs look to spend 1000 minimum.
I got my first laptop a year and a half ago. It's a Toshiba with Windows7. Apparently there's a promo or something, I got it for only $250, brand new from the store. It does depend on what you want to use it for, but I find that as a high school student, this laptop fits my needs wonderfully! I can game all day long (till my parents complain) and it can support all the work type stuff like GIMP and Microsoft and Google Chrome.
If you need a gaming computer a good one to get would be an Alienware computer at Alienware.com they sell high end systems top of the line and they are now owned by Dell so you know you will get a good system.
Apple MacBook--the largest one with the most memory you can afford--you won't have to worry about hacking or spam or a host of other irritations which are legion in PC laptops, and they're just so much better all around.
