My boyfriend insists that the birth control pill isn't safe enough without condoms. Is it really necessary to have both at the same time?

I'll be getting on birth control soon, and I told my boyfriend this. He thinks it's necessary to continue the use of condoms even after I'm on it. I was hoping we wouldn't have to spend that extra money and depend on the circumstance of having them on hand. Neither of us have any STDs or STIs. ... Is there a point to having condoms as well as BC?

All methods of birth control can fail, so it never hurts to use a back up method. I knew a girl who (more than once) got pregnant while on birth control, seriously it happens frequently enough, that if you really aren't looking to be pregnant, back up is always good.

no, it is not necessary, but if you don't want to have a kid, it definatly couldn't hurt

Both methods can fail (even with the usage of both at the same time, hence why I'm here), and dropping one can increase the chances of failure. It's better safe than sorry.

You should really ask I doctor. Your boyfriend is just trying to be safe not sorry. If a child does come out of it, you brought new life :) if your underage I reccomend nothing at all. (abstinence)

I'm sixteen and he is seventeen. I realize that he only wants to be safe, because he said that to me. But now that I'm getting on BC, I imagined that we wouldn't have to deal with condoms anymore. Hmm... I do appreciate his caution. Thanks for the answrer.

Very smart boyfriend!

No method of birth control is 100% effective. So unless you want yo become pregnant, as stated above by others, you should always have two methods of birth control. Condoms are a lot less expensive than a child.
