I interpret the quote very differently than you do. To me, it means that we shouldn't look to the sky and the gods for what is right and wrong, but within ourselves. Morality and truth come from within, not from the supernatural.

It may be useful in a synthetic manor to clarify "what" we are talking about in metaphysical philosophy, but organically speaking anything that is real is "natural". This to includes the "inside your self" as you say. Anyways, I better get back to the reality outside Ask. Lol

Caltex, yes, however that all hinges on the definition we're using. Buddhism is considered by I think most of higher education as one of the major world religions. I see religion in a less technical way...as a world view of life and meaning, so yeah a philosophy. However offensive it may stele many of u, atheism can (as long as it has elements of organization, leadership, definable ideas and "world/cosmological" view) be known as a secular religion. It really doesn't matter to me, as long as u guys don't start saying things like "we don't believe anything" or atheism is science...stuff like that. See ya latter!

@Dk: First, are you saying there IS a reality outside of Ask.com?
Secondly, when I use the word "belief" in the context of these types of discussions, I am aligned with the second definition for the word on Dictionary.com which reads, "confidence in the truth or existence of something not immediately susceptible to rigorous proof." Given that definition, I would have to say that atheists generally do not accept as true any concept of the natural universe which is not based on rigorous proof. As for a supernatural universe, we have not been presented with any rigorous proof that it exists.

Thanks dk. I know that my way of looking at things is a bit twisted but I like to play with wordes.
I had a very menial job with a large Japanese company (one of the "sogo shosha") and whenever anybody was having a downer they'd come in for a chat and go away smiling. I did more for that company telling jokes than in the job they were paying me for.

I hear Christian apologists talking about how "their" Golden Rule is so superior to the same rule differently phrased in other religions. Apparently, other "Rules" talk about how you should NOT do to others what you wouldn't want THEM doing to YOU. And the Christian rule (instead of focusing on the negative) focuses on the POSITIVE. Oh what a great and glorious religion. Obviously from God. Yada yada yada.
Frankly, the negative one makes more sense. Don't do stuff you wouldn't want them doing to you.

Yeah, I'm stuck in the 60s even though I was born much later. If I wasn't a hippie, I'd definitely be a punk, that's why I started following you. I love the Sex Pistols, I just found Sid & Nancy online (dvd) after 20 odd years. I grew up in the 80s & the punk look is what I'm attracted to, but its the hippies hearts that I love.

From now on after the Hel on earth(seems Literaly) that I've been through I'd say as my ancestors did" That which does not Destroy me makes me Stronger!!!" i even have a symbol that i am going to get a tattoo of that symbolized this in my family fit many MANY generations...It has helped me hold on to inner strength in this terrible part of my life!
