My husband and I married because we love each other; because we wanted to have a family, and felt that children needed as much parental support as possible--and this is better with a committed relationship between those parents. And last (and most important, because it's what we're instructed to do:) "For this reason, a man shall leave his father and his mother and is joined to his wife....and whom God has joined together, no-one may separate".
We have been married 42 years, by the way.

To take advantage of the legal protections of marriage. Of course, you get responsibilities with that marriage contract too. Marriage is more helpful for any children of people who cohabit.

I think they do it for reasons other then that as well.... I dunno, I honestly couldn't care less about that aspect, but I still want to get married.

I'm sure most people aren't quite so "clinical" about it, or at least I hope they aren't. It is a legal contract though so these are ideas to consider. We got married when we were older and had lived together for years. We weren't planning on more kids (had one anyway) and we did just do it as a symbolic gesture. We've been together more than thirty years.

^Grats on that, it seems fewer and fewer people these days can claim they've been married for more then a few years.

To take that sacred bond before god. To join together as one and share a last name. Marriage is beautiful and couldn't be taken for granted.

Many of the females in my family don't change their names and haven't for the last century at least. Many cultures have never had married couples share their name. And cultures that aren't particularly religious don't always base marriage on God.

And that's your opinion. I went to a nursing home once and talked to the residents. They all said marriage was before god and to join as one before god. I love talking with the older generation. They knew more about love and life. Now yes some women do not change the last name now a day's, but I haven't met a woman yet that didn't want her husbands last name. Some women are so paranoid that they actually believe it will take their identity.
