Should I put my dog down(as in take it to the vet and let them kill it)?

I have a pit bull chow and mastiff mix. My dad gave him away 2 months ago. And I got him back. My dad got rid of him because we got sued. We got sued because I was walking him(his name is Trouble) and a little kid come up to him after I told her not to pet him. She went to pet Trouble and and he bit her. And he is a good guard dog. But I dont know if I should take him to the vet and out him down. My uncle said up to me and I can not choose. PLEASE HELP....

Report as

i would keep him!! It's not even his fault!! He was just doing what he was trained to do and that is guard. He made one mistake, so why take his life??? You wouldn't take a humans life for a silly mistake like that. He seems like a great dog, so I would either give him away or face whatever it is you have to if you keep him.

And I'm sure if your child was bitten that would be your true response, right? I love dogs. My first granddaughter is a pit bull. If she bit a kid when she wasn't being hurt or defending herself I sure wouldn't blame the kid. I would blame the ADULT who should be supervising the DOG.

Try to teach Trouble to only attack if a REAL threat is at hand. If you have troubles then I would get advice from a trainer. Putting him down would be my LAST resort.

Only animal control will if u turn it over to them as a menace dog

You can teach him that muzzles aren't bad... I used love and support for my very skittish girl. I petted her mouth with it to convince her it was harmless, then slowly, over the time of maybe an hour, and tried putting it on. Each time she freaked, she got a firm NO and when she let the muzzle on her mouth, she got a treat. From then on, every time I got the muzzle strapped on, I took it off and gave her a treat. Now she has zero problems with muzzles! EVERY dog will freak out with a muzzle if not trained to put up with one. Using a muzzle on an untrained dog is like trying to ride an untrained horse... -_-

Look at it as the LAW looks at it. You were in control of your animal, you warned the child, you didn't remove you and the dog from the area, the child still persued to pet the dog, and got bit. It's your fault! And sadly too many communities are now banning pits and pit cross breeds. If you're sued, you will have been very glad to have paid to put the animal down, compared as to what courts are now awarding dog bite victims!

When we choose to own big powerful animals, we take on tremendous responsibility. Clearly, nobody is too worried about a little poodle that nips and bites all the time, just shake them off, right. But these big dogs can rip your throat out. They don't get second chances when the nip or bite. They need training, guidance, supervision and exercise. Many people don't seem to understand this about some of the big breeds. It's just a set up for failure for the dog, the owner and the victims of an indisciplined or untrained animal.

There are trainers who can help you with your dogs aggression. You will need to find one who specializes in aggressive dogs. Meanwhile, unless you get a muzzle that fits him, do not take him in public or let anyone who he is not acquainted with, near him. If you don't get him socialized properly you open yourself up to more lawsuits and the dog will be required to be put down. But not before he is taken away from you and subjected to strangers, testing, and overall stress. Don't put him through this. Look for a professional dog trainer. Don't pull any punches, tell the trainer exactly what has happened.

Most dogs can be socialized and trained to be around people and other animals without attacking them. Your dog for whatever reason has not learned this. You don't sound as if you have a solid plan for improving the dog's situation other than keeping him away from strangers and in a strong cage. That doesn't seem like a great deal for the dog. He needs constant supervision and control by an experienced handler. I hope for his sake he is trainable. He isn't going to last long with these behaviors.

Have you considered surrendering him to a no kill or breed rescue. I can certainly understand that your Dad is not eager to be sued again and he can become uninsurable if the dog is living on his property. Since the dog has bitten people and killed other dogs, I would invest in serious training if you try to keep him. If you lived where I do, the police would have seized him already and placed him in a new environment.

No, you just need to be more careful with your dog. If you are too worried about getting sued again, then sell/give away the dog to somebody who wants a dog that is aggressive, somebody that wants a guard dog.
Or you can just keep, and warn them and say he WILL bite.

You alone can not train your dog not to bite. If Trouble had attacked the little girl, there would be no more little girl. It was a warning bite. Putting him down is a last resort and you can't just pawn him off to someone else because his basic problem still remains, he's aggressive. There are so many different rescue groups that take on challenging pets, and even more no kill shelters. Turn your dog over to a no kill shelter and tell them EVERYTHING. So he can have a fair shot at a happy healthy life.

Dude... take it to a pitbull rescue... There are tons of places in Oregon and Cali that take them. Google that S***, don't kill the dog. If you can't keep it from biting people, you definitely should not have it, the responsible thing to do is find it a home. I would take it to a pit rescue center, those people are very passionate about taking care of these animals.

I think you do have a tough choice to make here. If you are asking my opinion, it would probably be to assess the situation. If this is the only case where Trouble has bitten someone, I would suggest, depending on the warning that your dog gave and how deep the bite is, that you not put him down so that if it was a one time thing, you don't lose a good dog. I have had a little experience training dogs, and there could be many possible reasons to having Trouble bite the young girl. The surrounding area might have been stressful, and a dog will show aggression a lot when it is fearful. Trouble might also have been scared of the girl running towards him, and reacted instinctively. (Pit bulls get a lot of bad stereotyping because of their breed, but believe me when I say there are more sweet pit bulls I've met than mean ones.) Also if he is a good guard dog there is the possibility that Trouble was guarding you. There are a thousand more reasons as well, so my advice is calm down, and as hard as it is, you have to decide what is best for you, Trouble, and the community. Also I would call a Certified Animal Behaviorist or trainer.

I love pitbulls and honestly NO!!! I've grown up with them and they're very loving and yes, i admit a little over protective. in his defense you did tell the kid not to pet him and unless the kid was seriously injured they have no reason to sue you. do not put him down and if worse comes to worse, give him away. only after you make a thorough investigation, meaning you make SURE he is going to a good home. losing your dog is very hard. ( I cried myself to sleep every night for two months after giving away [ i had no choice! ] ) but it's even harder when they're really gone. (DEAD)

Absolutely not!! I would defiantly keep the dog!! you did tell the kid not to pet the dog and she continued to do it anyways. and I wouldn't blame it on you, the dog or the kid, I would say it was definatly the kids parents fault because they are suppose to be wayching after the kid so he/she wouldn't do things like that. Don't allow people to give pitbulls a bad reputation!! the dog was doing what it was trained to do.... protect you!! Train him some to get him more people friendly and prove people wrong that pitbulls are all bad! they are great dogs! KEEP HIM! :)

I do not believe you should put him down as long as you keep him AWAY from people. DO NOT let it happen again or they will make you euthanize him. Pet stores sell muzzles that you could put on him when you take him out... Then he could never bite anyone!

We have had Great Danes my whole life and of all eight of them were wonderful!! my baby, a 208 pund mastiff Dane mix bit a kid that was told he was protective, he is now rehomed in Virginia with a trainer because he was unpredictable. but if he bites again you shoul rehome him

I wouldn't, if you warned the little kid NOT to pet him and the kid disobeyed your warning then well I wouldn't. There are many ways to make sure it won't happen again though. Try having a muzzle for extra protection but if he isn't very social around other humans (overprotective) try teaching him that humans won't hurt you. Also I know that when my dog is on the leash he is WAY more protective then when he's off the leash. But he's trained so that he always comes when we call. There are a lot of ways to ensure it won't happen again. And it was the kid's fault, that's the reason that parents teach their kids to ask if they can pet the dog and if the owner says no, then DON'T pet the dog :) Whatever choice you choose, make sure you won't regret it
