Is it wierd to have wolves as pet?

I am just wondering is it?

Report as

Wolves are not just dogs... Dogs have been tamed and trained for generations... It's cruel to keep a wild animal as a pet...

Dogs are descended from wolves, Alex. Wolves are not descended from dogs. And it IS cruel to put wild animals into cages to stroke our own egos.
Report as
training any animal and keeping it in an enclosed area or on a leash is called domesticating. common house pets have been domesticated for generations, though they still have a bit of wild in them. you cant call it cruel when you "own" an animal. however, it isnt a very good idea to keep a wolf or such bc they havent had any sort of domestication. it would be like having a grizzly bear as a pet. they could snap at any time.
Report as
Not to mention that it is illegal to capture a wolf, and it is very morally wrong.
Report as
Dan... Cats and dogs are the ones that have been domesticated... Wolves haven't been domesticated for as long... It would be cruel to keep a wolf stuck on a chain or in the house...

You are very confused, Alex. A very long time ago, pre-historic man made friends with wolves by giving them bits of the meat they cooked. Over thousands and thousands of years, man used selective breeding to create different breeds of dogs.

Today, dogs are domesticated animals and are no longer wild. Wolves, however, are still wild animals, like lions and grizzly bears. Wolves are just now recovering from almost total extinction in the U.S., and to capture a wolf is illegal.

It is depraved to put wild animals into cages just so we can feel special. No wild animal should EVER have to live in a cage instead of roaming free.
Report as
every animal has wild in them.
if you live in an area where theres wolves everywhere and you leave food out for them. in most states thats illegal, to feed the wildlife.
Report as
@Dandeelion--There is no place in America (except Alaska) where there are wolves everywhere. Wolves were extinct in the lower 48 until a group of biologists and lawyers brought some Canadian wolves to Yellowstone Park in 1995. I am proud to have been a member of that group.

I am happy to report that wolves distrust man completely, and won't come near to us if they can possibly avoid it. It is this one thing that *might* save them from becoming extinct again, this time forever.

Tex, Alex doesn't fully appreciate the complexities of animal behavior. She asked a question about euthanizing one of her dogs earlier today. It was a domestic breed that has bitten people, killed smaller animals and even killed a cow. It broke out the windows in her home to attack before. She was asking for advice on what to do with this dog and she got plenty. Now there is a wolf in the mix...
Report as
I been haveing wolf in my breeeds i hvae DUH
Report as
Well, Alex, it is past time to STOP having wolves in your breeds. You need to put the animal to sleep who is attacking people and other animals. If you think you need to get another dog, for God's sake, go to your local shelter and pick out a nice, calm little dog that desperately needs a home. When you buy these wolf hybrids, you are a big part of the problem. It's time to switch sides and become part of the solution, instead.
Report as
NO only 2 of my dogs r like and. we r training them not to.. It is bad that we have to move out of the state. i dont buy my friend give them to me because we rescue.
Report as
What kind of training do you have to deal with wolves? Are you a biologist? A zoologist? If you are not, you are not qualified to be working with wild animals.

If it is a wolf hybrid that is attacking and killing other animals, and if it killed a cow, then it most assuredly is, you cannot "train" that out of him. These animals are wolves, wolves are carnivores, and they eat meat. They have no knowledge or understanding of the concept of pets, and you can't train them to not be wolves.

If you cannot securely confine these animals to prevent them from getting out and running loose, you should euthanize them to protect your family from getting sued. If you do keep them, you also have a serious obligation to spay and neuter them so that they cannot reproduce. Allowing them to reproduce will only result in more confused, dangerous animals. ALL reputable rescue organizations immediately spay and neuter the animals they take in.

It is cruel and unkind to do the things that have been done to produce wolf hybrids. It is wrong to do this to a wild animal, and if you don't do what is right for THEM, then you are in no way rescuing them, but are simply collecting them to stroke your own ego.
Report as
You act as if every one lives in America Texasdogmom and wolves have never before attacked a human unless sick or starving
Report as
I worked on the team that brought the wolves back to Yellowstone in 1995, so please don't lecture me.

No. Not as long as it's tame in the sense that you raised it from a pup so it won't harm you.

Wolf pups will grow up just as wild as their parents. Wild animals cannot be tamed and made into pets. It is wrong to try. Wild animals should never be kept in cages. It is one of the most cruel things a man can possibly do to an animal. Wild animals NEED to roam free to be what they are: hunters, predators, magnificent and beautiful.
Report as
You say that but how do you know that i know they can tamed from expeirience

Not if you raised it from a pup
Report as
@Alex--this same answer is getting very tedious, and it is absolutely wrong.

@WildCatFan--Wolf pups grow up to be just as wild as their parents. You cannot tame a wild animal just by getting it when it is young. Wild animals deserve to be what God made them to be: magnificent and beautiful, free to roam and to hunt. And it is illegal to capture a wolf in the U.S.

Report as
You actually can ive seen it with coyotes coons and even a wild turkey
Report as
I am not impressed with what you have seen. You are comparing prey animals and a sniveling damned coyote with an apex predator. You have not seen, nor will you see, an apex predator put into a cage and tamed.

Please check out a program on Animal Planet called, "Fatal Attractions." It is on one night this week. It is about dimwits like you who thought they had a special "gift" to tame apex predators like lions, tigers, bears, and wolves. That's what they thought right up until the moment that one of their "babies" killed them dead.

You are in dire need of an education in this subject. Please pursue it right away.

@I_dnt.get.it--thank God there is someone who understands the truth.

@Wildcatfan--It is just as illegal to keep a raccoon in a cage as to keep a wolf. However, it is silly beyond words to think that a wolf is the same as a raccoon. Wolves are just as wild and dangerous as African lions and leopards. They are not dogs in any sense of the word, and, like lions and leopards, they cannot be tamed, even if you get them when they are young.

@Alex--I sincerely hope that you will not support the a**holes who breed dogs with captive wolves any more. By keeping these poor, confused hybrid animals, you are encouraging them to continue keeping wild animals in cages.

Keeping any wild animal in a cage is morally wrong. PLEASE spay and neuter the animals you have now, and don't buy any more.

It is weird, and to have a wolf as a pet, you'd need to take the whole pack in, or have a lone wolf. Also, wolves take time to know. You need to become friends with them over time. They are very loyal once they are tamed though, I've heard. It is dangerous, but it has been done. DO NOT KEEP A WOLF IN A HOUSE.

Hybrids? So they are not totally wolves? In that case, it is okay. In the case of raising a wild animal, it is dangerous, as they become overly energetic...

This is the sickest conversation I have ever heard on this website. When you put a wild animal into a cage and raise and feed it, and then release it back into the wild, the animal will live a miserable life.

Wolves are social animals, and they live together in packs. To force a wolf to live alone is to cause him to live an unhappy, unnatural life.

You sure sound proud of yourself about all this, Alex. It's easy to tell that you don't give a damn about the animals. You only care about the fact that other kids think it's cool, and you think that makes you cool, too.

You are not cool, Alex. You are totally uneducated about this subject, and whoever your adults are are obviously people who support the captive wolf criminals. Don't call yourself a rescue when you don't even understand the repercussions of what you are doing. You know nothing about wolves, and you know nothing about rescue.
Report as
Jeez we were just having a conversation I really don't want to hear you bitch

I don't really care what you want. This girl is completely ignorant about this subject. She cares nothing for the facts about wolves, including the fact that keeping them in captivity is illegal, and breeding wolf hybrids is a sick, sorry thing to do.

Is it weird that Sigmund and Roy have white tigers running around their house? Yes, it is a bit weird, as any wild animal kept as a pet has the potential to "turn" on its owner unexpectedly, and do you really want to take that chance? (Plus, it would be a lot of work and expense to keep a wild animal as a pet.) Most people that are fascinated with wolves usually just get a Husky instead. ;)

@StillWaters--are you aware that one of Sigfried and Roy's tigers turned on Sigfried and damned near killed him?

Wolf hybrids cannot be trusted, and whatever Alex says, keep in mind that she doesn't know anything at all about wolves. She's just so proud that other kids think it's cool. It's not at all cool. It's morally wrong and it's also illegal. A federal crime.

Texasdogmom, I don't understand, I think my comment made it pretty clear that your sentiment was exactly my point! Alex, you're gonna do what you're gonna do, just please be careful and know that there is always a risk involved with wild animals, no matter how tame they seem to be.

My grandmother actually had two although the circumstances were a bit different... She got them both full grown from the wild after she found one in a trap on her property, she waited for him to weaken enough she could get him loose and she nursed him back to health. She tried to return him to the wild but he wouldn't leave her. The second one had been blinded by birdshot. They were both absolutely fantastic animals, quiet, well mannered but also highly protective of my grandmother.
That said, I don't believe the average person should try to domesticate a wolf.

The police are right to be "up his butt." It is illegal (a federal crime) to capture a wolf and/or to keep a wolf in captivity. If your cousin cared one whit about wolves, he would never have done this to a magnificent wild creature. I hope the police stay "up his butt" until he learns!
