Perhaps because if God destroyed temptation and opposition (the function of Satan) then He would have in effect destroyed a fundamental part of humanity: the will to choose and prove. Without the "Satanic" humanity's purpose is rendered void of dynamic relationship with one another and ultimately with God. Humanity essentially would've become zombies.
If there was a God, and if there had been a Garden of Eden, and if a pair of innocents named Adam and Eve lived there, and if there was a Devil in the form of a snake, then your question is completely valid. Why in the world would a loving God not destroy the tempter who would lead them into error? If our own children were in danger of death and eternal torment (the consequence of disobedience to this "loving" God) wouldn't we do everything in our power to help them?
But if you really believe all that stuff and want to find a Christian answer to it, you could do worse than read dkloven's answer which explains it better than most.
( 11 ) And We have certainly created you, [O Mankind], and given you [human] form. Then We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam"; so they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was not of those who prostrated.
( 12 ) [Allah] said, "What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?" [Satan] said, "I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay."
( 13 ) [Allah] said, "Descend from Paradise, for it is not for you to be arrogant therein. So get out; indeed, you are of the debased.
( 14 ) [Satan] said, "Reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected."
( 15 ) [Allah] said, "Indeed, you are of those reprieved."
( 16 ) [Satan] said, "Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path.
( 17 ) Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful [to You]."
( 18 ) [Allah] said, "Get out of Paradise, reproached and expelled. Whoever follows you among them - I will surely fill Hell with you, all together." Quran (7:11-18
We must first question why did this Omniscient god make the mistake of creating Satan even after knowing that this angel would turn against him, corrupt men, and be cast into hell? Or did god design satan for that very purpose? And if so, why? Yet again, doesn't god's sadness that satan turned against him show god's lack of Omnipotence? But that's not all, seeing the lack of thrill, this Benevolent god, had let this equally powerful devil to play havoc with men by a savage plan so that he can have an excuse to eternally roast them. Why? To test us; to see how much he can torture us before grilling; to see how much we can suffer? Doesn't it sound like a pervert father, even with the full knowledge, allowing a confirmed pedophile in the bedroom of his children so that he can condemn them for contacting AIDS?
Because, to account for the misery & to keep a scapegoat for his blunders in the world, the biblical god needed the Satan! Only in that way could the Christians mythologist portray their god as "all love and forgiveness". Indeed, this god works in a mysterious, obscure and breathtakingly cruel way!!
It's because The Lord can not Destroy himself. He made everything in the likeliness of himself. If he destroyed Satan where would we be?? The whole balance of the earth, Spiritual and Heavenly power would be Chaotic and would end up being destroyed. That is why.
It appears God allows for the growth of evil and good both. Why he does, is the mystery of evil. There are few satisfactorily answers for this, as to the unbelieving, all answers sound punitive, to the believing, unfair. But our ways are not His ways, and he has a purpose and design we do not ken.

God wanted to give Adam and Eve a freedom to choose. Remember it was Satan who tempted Eve and Eve was the one who persuaded Adam to eat the fruit. The reason why I believe that God didn't destroy Satan is because he will face consequences at the end. God knows the future, He's knows what's going to happen to Satan. Hope you won't mistaken me for saying that God hates Satan. This is like a coin that has two sides to it. On one side God loves him, on the other he hates him. In another word, God hates and loves him. Well...at least this is what i think it is. I still need to study and learn more. This can be really confusing too.
The point was to give humans a CHOICE. Without a choice, things to choose between, there would be no real choice. He gave humans free will and a CHOICE - Him or Not Him and we have pretty much in general chosen 'Not Him since. If God destroyed satan then He wiuld have taken away Adam and Eves right to choose and He wont do that. He wanted them and wants us to choose Him freely, not because theres no other choice.

Because the authors of what became biblical texts, needed the antagonist, so they created a titanic scapegoat for all worldly miseries and misdeeds, to keep the image of their perfect all-knowing deity faultless and unsullied. Who would enjoy fables if there were no big bad wolf? Why so great a destructive force could be permitted to run roughshod over a god's 'children' points to a divine apathy, ineptitude, or negligence. Oh wait, there's always that elusive 'end' when all get their due. Humbug.
Satan told Eve that she would absolutely not die and that if she ate of the fruit, she would be like God. She chose to wrongly use her free will. If God had destroyed Satan, and Adam and Eve at that time, the issue of God's sovereignty, or right to rule or right to decide what is right and wrong, would not have been settled. Plus, remember that there were angels in heaven who also saw what went on in Eden. Time was needed for this issue to be settled. God has given man thousands of years to prove that he does not need God, that he can govern himself. Man has failed and it won't be long before God finally destroys Satan and his demons. Only then can we have peace and security on the earth, under God's kingdom, ruled by Christ Jesus.
There is a bigger picture here. God created Adam and even with free will. When he placed them in the garden he told them to eat from every tree of the garden to serve as food, except the one in the middle of the garden, you must not eat or touch it, that you must not die. Clear direction was given.they chose not to follow it. Satan used them to create doubt in gods right to rule.you see, Adam and eve were not the only ones watching.there were also angels. If God had destroyed Satan then doubt would gave set in and it would seem that God had something to proof. We as independent agents are given the choice and is very simple, God's way or Satan's. There is no middle.gods name has been put through the mud since the beginning of time.but the best trick Satan ever did was to make sure people don't believe he exist. Blame it all on God.
