I got burned twice from sellers. One I had to take to small claims court and never did get my money back. EBay makes a big buck hosting these transactions and if it's seen as a place where you'll get ripped off, the business would dry up so they make a big effort to insure it's safe and fair. Still....it'all comes down to the individuals involved.
Its probably as good as you can expect to get on the net. They try to regulate and police the sellers and offer arbitration and also offer they fairly save PayPal option. So if you use the site in a smart way, check feedback and see how much negative feed there is compared to positive then READ the negative. Sometimes the negs are left by the sort of buyers who are just not pleasable and sometimes its legit. In general, if youre smart, ebay is fine. Ive only had two bad experiences. One the producr was broken and the second the seller took months to never send me the item. After three months of personal email contact and use of ebays arbitration i did eventually get the item. Most of my transaction have been very successful.

I love to buy but hate to sell on Ebay. I prefer in person. I don't like going to the post office, mailing everything and paying fees. Its only worth what someone will pay. Fees and delivery cut into that no matter how you look at it. I guess If you have something worth $3, you can do buy it now at 1 cent to eliminate fees+ $2.99 shipping. At $4 total, that same Item may be on the site for A LOT longer than you want. I pick little odds and ends sometimes for small change and kind of feel bad for sellers sometimes who have to pay more in delivery than what I gave them. I always give anyone I bought something for like 50 cents or less a 5 star. I mean come on! A stamp is 46c. You just have to know what you're looking at and have a idea of what its worth. Its a learning process; like learning the difference between 10k, 14k gold, GF and GP, AU and BU or UNC coins, proof sets vs mint ect; depending on what you're on. They have a good system in place. You don't have to mail until paid, Paypal is a secure site for your Ebay account that won't charge fees and If you don't receive an Item, its good about issuing a refund, even if the seller refuses. This rarely happens though.
