The English, they used to put it in their drinks, that's where the expression "drink a toast" comes from.

I did. Way back when before any of you we're born. I had some bacon and instead of just eating it I decided to make a sandwich with and as I was making my sandwich I noticed that my bread was very soft,so I thought it would be nice to have some crunch to it,i I had my top scientists invent me something to make it all crunchy and so they created the toaster. I used and it and I made the perfect BLT.

As hunterdude says, John Henry Toast accidentally discovered it in 1753, when he tried to build a fire guard from old slices of white bread.
