Is it illegal to marry someone adopted into your family?

my cousin brought his best friend into our family 11 years ago and we liked each other then now that we are grown up we like each other even more but he was finally adopted last year at 19 years old. can i marry him?

Even if the two of you were 2nd cousins it would be legal. Adoption has nothing to do with the reason for restrictions on marriage. It has everything to do with Genetics! As repulsive as it sounds brother sister, father daughter, first cousin, are too closely related genetically to ensure viable, healthy offspring. There is historical data from 16th and 17th century Europe indicating still births and many cases of dimentia or other neurological disorders including insanity in many cases.

I don't know if its legal, if you we're to disown him, yes but I don't know if its such a good idea to do that, I'm sorry. But I hope you can get something figured out!!!

It might be possible since he's not part of your bloodline.

Usually legal, but you would have to look into state laws.

I didn't think it would be since legally they are cousins, adopted but I didn't think it mattered to the court since they are of the same family?

Some states allow first cousins to marry. Some only allow as close as second cousins. Some have exemptions for adopted family members.

Oh, okay thanks! It just seems so... strange, I never thought the courts would allow it. Now for adopted cousins I can see that happening.

Yeah I thought it was really weird too. I got curious and looked it up once, after hearing the "inbred West Virginians" jokes one too many times. LOL. But I think the closest family member allowed by any state was a step-sibling (100% not same blood.)

Well technically since he's not related to you, you could but at the same time it could be awkward since you were a family.
