Is it better to volunteer somewhere before getting a first job?

Would you recommend it? What did you do?

Sure, it's real time experience that's allows you to get the feel, being reliable,schedule change, learning, understanding new responsibility.
It can also give you advantage on your application.

I interned at my current work and then had both the established relationship with the other employees, and my past work acted as a credit so I got a higher paycheck. :)

Yep! It is very difficult to get a job with out experience, and you can't get experience unless you get a job.....

So volunteering is your best option :)
