When you read a book you enter into a contract with the author to create the characters, to feel what they feel, to share in their lives. The author describes them, of course, but it's your own imagination that creates them for you. You know their thoughts, your feel their pain and their triumphs. While you are reading you share their lives.
When you go to the movies you have no input. You just watch two-dimensional action on a screen.
