Just have a spray bottle by your side, and whenever they do something you don't like say "no!" And spray them with a bit of water. They'll learn what no means soon. if your cat likes water, like mine, and just kinda looks at the wet spot on their fur, instead just say no, wait a couple seconds, then pick them up and throw them onto a soft surface, like a bed. soon they'll know what is about to happen to them when they hear "no", and stop what they're doing fast. if they stop, pet them for following your commands.
Training a cat is like teaching an individual. Don't expect that they have some innate drive to please like a Dog. I would recommend using lots of positive reinforcement. Deprivation can be just as effective as punishment without the relapse
What I do is I keep a spray bottle just in case. and if your doing something and they come and start invading your space just gently push them and say "later" once you do it for sometime they would start to understand that later means to go away. Just don't hit the cat that would show them that you hate them and then they really will be bad!(:
