Do you think there could be a fifth dimension?

A couple of my friends were discussing this topic and I thought it was crazy that they both thought of it, and told each other on the same day. All I can say about that conversation, is that it was loud and excitable. Basically, they claim that the force of gravity manipulates time and space, thus making a fifth dimension that could be out of our reach. One friend, We'll call her M described it as the universe as a mattress, gravity is someone sitting down, and time and I think matter is a glass of juice. If someone sits on the bed, the glass of juice will spill and the juice will travel to that unfortunate person's behind. Thus, is the fifth dimension theory by M. The other friend, C, described it by giving me and my BF a napkin and a battery. We held the napkin like a sheet to be folded and she placed the battery in the middle and it made a dent and sunk the napkin in. She says that like the battery, gravity pulls or pushes the matters of space and time into a new dimension, thus, C's fifth dimension theory. What do you think? Please don't put any goofy comments. Please give logical or data based answers.

Interesting thoughts. I wish I was at the discussion. Way too much to discuss here. a thought. instead of the battery I would put playdough or clay or something malleable. something that moved with the movement of the sheet.

Or. A sheet that was holding a cornstarch/water mixture that was hung above a bass speaker. It's a liquid. Until a force hits it. Then it turns almost solid.

It's possible. After all, if there can be a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th dimension, wjy not a fifth?

Report as

Possibly, I mean Membrane Theory says there could be up to ELEVEN dimensions!

For some reason I just want to yell 1.21 jigawatts.

Haha 10 Cool Points for the Doc Browm referrence!

Thanks. We all know how to travel through time. The problem is finding a cool car.
Report as

I think there could be...I mean its possible so why not...

Report as

Perhaps. Something like a realm or inner area.

That story is interesting. Someone also mentioned that in two years, a comet will pass by. That comet has nickel, which I don't understand, but can explain many things about space.

I not only think that a fifth (or fourth if you exclude time) dimension is possible, but is required. Understand that how we perceive the world is by the detection of photons of light hitting objects and coming back to our eyes. We also understand and move about the cartesian 3 dimensions readily. We have observed the activity of other particles though, such as electrons. If you look at electron orbitals at hybridisations greater than S, you will find that electrons move about space where they can move from one spot to another without ever occupying the 3 dimensional space between. This is true, for instance, in a P orbital. Now these electrons, that are a form of matter, are not created or destroyed in this translocation, so how does this happen? This is an interatomic example of electron tunneling.

Holy mess. I think my brain died. Thank you so much! I'll have to show this to M and see what she says. If that's ok with you.
Report as
Of course it is. :-) hopefully your brain is just being stretched a little.

Don't take your time to learn it unless the initiator of the theory is able to tell you where and how to use this theory, otherwise you are waste your time on an expensive advanced high-level garbage.

Yes...and they had some great hits....Up, up and Away, Age of Aquarius
(sorry, but someone had to do it)

Report as
yes, someone has to do it, but not the one who never know anything about it. we should not follow unless it can be used.

it really will waste our time.

Poor Annie. Missing all the references.
Report as
not at all.

(Obviously......)

That was great Mona!
Report as
tralbry, it is useful for the scientists to read all the "references" which we can't really use in our dialy life and daily work. but the other people in our society should be more practical, and I don't think it is good to learn all the courses about all kinds of theory at school before there are really not used in our real life.

If we don't have to know all these theories, our pressure at school could be released greatly, we might be able to go to work earlier. I even hope we don't have to take exams about the courses like history and geography, and so on, unless we want to be a teacher of history and geography.

To be frankly, I have forget almost all the knoweges I have taken a lot time to recite about history and geography, but I know how to check the knowledge when I need to use them. That's already enough if we are able to find the knowlege.

Report as
tralbry, i am sorry, but i just mean that we should not learn a lot of such theories at school, and it is not bad if this kind learning is only our hobby.

we will have more people to have schizophrnia in this case, tralbry, i am seriously answer this question. this indeed will give us great pressure and we have less chance to really accept all these knowledges. a lot of disorder will happen.

it doesn't mean that we remember a lot of knowledge which we can't really use, we belong to the high level persons.
Report as
High level persons, Annie? We aim for harmony and understanding, sympathy and trust abounding. No more falsehoods or derisions, golden living dreams of visions and mystic crystal revelation - the mind's true liberation
Report as
i am very serious and practical to say all these, tralbry.
Report as
I am practical too and must search the clouds for a star to guide us. If by some chance you find yourself, we'll find a cloud to hide us. We'll keep the moon beside us in my beautiful balloon.

@Annie.... "Imagination is intelligence having fun" ~ Unknown

A friend just posed the "Imagination is intelligence having fun" quote and I think it was attributed to Einstein. Is that a myth?
Report as
Almost, he said, "Imagination is more important than knowledge." (Albert Einstein).
Report as
and he said "creativity is intelligence having fun." But after all that research, I found out who said the quote that I cited.....it was George Scialabba.

The 5th dimension would be probibility space

Report as

Megan, you have some very interesting friends and they have some very interesting minds.

Could it be so? Sure, why not? There are so many things we don't yet understand but, until I wake one morning with my bottom covered with orange juice, I'm going to stick with the three I understand and the one I can conjecture about.

There's no doubt about it. Ask is a wonderful site to visit.

Annie's quite the philosopher. I posted the link up there, too for her edification but she's struggling with English so I don't think she's quite ready for humor.

No ..... she absolutely is not ready for humor.....and maybe years away form sarcasm.

I can't even accept a 4th dimension, I don't believe time exists.

Report as
Than you're dumb.
Report as
Dumb or not, I don't believe time exists. Not do I believe in more than 3 dimensions.
Report as

Lets find a 4th first, but if there was, we can't view it. In the say way you can't see the 3rd from the 2nd. But lets not jump to conclusions and let the smart people do their work.

Report as
I dont know about you but I can see height, width, and depth... which are the first 3.... time is considered the fourth dimension, which you cant see but must atleast mathematically exist
Report as
I suppose.
Report as
I don't see why it must exist.
