why did the star wars movies come out backwards?

George Lucas chose the episode he thought would be most compelling to audiences, it wasn't reliant on previous episodes to set it up as subsequent ones were. This was an untested story, and revolutionary method. It isn't likely Lucas could've predicted this would become the saga it did.
